His ceiling, however, is arguably him topping out as a decent 1st line center. I don’t see him ever becoming an elite talent, unless he takes massive strides on defense, skating, and shooting in a very short time. I feel more comfortable saying he likely winds up as a strong 2nd line option, with a David Krejci-esque impact. I believe Zary could end up being that underrated 2C option for teams and be a dynamic, clutch leader for whatever NHL team drafts him.
Due to him being on the older end of the spectrum in this draft, along with his physical maturity, he could be closer to being NHL-ready then it currently seems. He’s seemingly already made strong strides on the defensive side of the puck from last season into this past season, and if that continues, he could shock a lot of people and be ready in two to three years from now.

So checking my list (I'm not a total nerd, list was for the CPHL draft - so yeah i guess I'm a nerd.
I had Zary
- Ranked #15 overall
- Average selection of 15.83
- Range from 10 to 24 from all the sources I used which was over 20 in total
- I had him ranked just behind Mercer and Quinn and ahead of Holloway, Jarvis, Amirov (who I liked a lot), Schneider, and Lapierre.
So seems like a great value pick, particularly with the two extra 3rds factored in.

Couldn't agree more and couldn't be happier!
My hope for our 1st rnder was Hendrix Lapierre, but he is not without risk, and that was me thinking Zary would be off the board in the 12-15 range.
Well effen played, Tre!
Flames won the 1st rnd.

If nothing else, it will be an interesting draft to look back on (and to flow the progression of the players selected 19 to 24 [and of course the players selected with those two third round picks]). I hope, of course, for great things for all players selected by the Flames (even if Lapierre wasn't one of them).

That's the concerning part. They have to invest bigtime into him if they want him to be successful in our division. When you have MacKinnon and McDavid in your division you better have a roster who can keep up.

Brad getting Zary and two 3rds in the first round is the second best story of the night.

ROR was actually the comparable.
But even if he were to project to Sean, at 24th overall I hope you realize that would be outstanding value.

Intelligent move to not set the bar unrealistically high from the get go.

From the U18 highlights it looks like he's already played with Pelletier. Pretty cool to think that they could be linemates in the future. Hope he can improve his skating. That was also a knock on Bo Horvat when he was drafted but now his skating is so strong.

Does he have a chance at Team Canada this year? He's 19, so it's his only shot for the World Juniors.

But if he's not a dad now and he is making dad jokes anyway, is that a faux pa?

Sigh - in a deep draft if you are hoping your 1st rounder is a middle 6 player - you have failed.
