Start with the assumption I like Hall better, so teamwise, I'm happy with the roster.

Then assume Gaudreau is (a) not re-signing here; (b) has a 5 team list next year; (c) this makes him less valuable to a team not expecting him to re-sign there.

Any trade of Gaudreau is not getting back a player of equal value so it's about the futures - picks and prospects. Keumper, however, does fill a need.

Maybe they think Gaudreau will change his mind before 2022. AZ is a nice place to live. Or maybe they think they can push for a cup in the next two years with some other moves.

Except the reason they are looking to move OEL and Kuemper is that they need to cut their budget. They know they can't compete.

So trading good young ELC players is the last thing they are going to do.

And I think they know they would have no chance of re-singing Gaudreau.

Right. It's probably unworkable for that reason. That said, if it's short term, Gaudreau is on a good contract.

Pierre Maguire thinks it is the Flames or Oilers
Pierre Maguire is high.

Maybe he is 'High on Life' or maybe its Meth....either way...

If Taylor Hall is even remotely considering going back to Edmonton....either he is an idiot, or they are....or both.

Maybe if they give him McDavid money and term.

Look, I'd love to see Taylor Hall in Flames silks lighting up the Oilers. I just dont think that the money or term would be in the team's best interests or even plausible.

Prove me wrong Brad 'The Wizard' Treliving.

Although....his Free Agent signings have been underwhelming.

I’d prefer us waiting for free agency TBH. It doesn’t look like he will make a decision before the weekend, so why waste an asset to get his rights. The only exception is if it is a conditional pick that is traded based on if we sign him. Even then, we probably have a similar likelihood of signing him if we trade for his rights, as what we would have for free agency.

This would replace the gilmour trade as the worst trade in flames history.

OK, two prospects, that I named already. If they had a first I’d have taken that instead.

Keumper is a good goalie on a good cap hit. Add a first round pick + equivalent: Say Soderstrom and another prospect. Add Hall’s rights.

I don’t know why AZ does it, but it’s not bad for Calgary.

Hall has made it very clear he will go to FA and then take his time to decide. He has come this far, trading for his rights would be a waste.

Well, of course the trade depends on there being a deal pretty much ready to go. But TBF, even without him, any trade is going to involve (a) an inferior player and (b) picks and prospects.

I think having an exclusive negotiation window could be useful. If you have 3 extra days to talk to Hall and sell him on your vision it could swing the decision in your favour.

It is what it is until it isn’t.

If the Flames trade for Hall’s rights it gives them 2 full days to pitch him on everything and not the likely 30-60 minutes each team will get on a zoom call starting Friday.

They might trade for his rights and he still tests the market but that extra time could be critical to sell him on the Flames.

I swear in 2009 the Flames traded back in the first round to take Tom Erixon and acquired an extra third which they used along with Leopold’s negotiating rights to get the rights to Bouwmeester. Could see it happening again with Hall

No need to apologize as I said nothing about Bouwmeester returning. Strictly comparing the UFA situation with him in 2009 to the one with Hall today. You see the last major free agent the Flames signed of Hall’s caliber would be Bouwmeester who was a top 2/3 UFA back in 2009

That 2003 trade is interesting. Flames went from pick 20 to 23, picking up pick 84. Pretty comparable to last night with Treliving getting an extra 3rd rounder by moving down 2 more spots.
