I don't even think an 8 year contract is something you'd want to give anyway.

So trading for someone's rights does not give you the ability to sign them to an 8th year.

Thanks for that. Then I got nothin'!

On the other hand, Tre hasn't been very successful at signing big-ticket UFAs on free-agent day. I think the CP braintrust was overjoyed that Brad sat on his hands on July 1, 2019.
We're a very split bunch when it comes to signing/not-signing UFAs... hehe.

Wish we could've held onto him. He was our leader in the playoffs with OEL being an absolute ghost..
Oh well.

A player can go from having multiple possible offers to zero offers in the blink of an eye. A team can go from multiple irons in the fire to none in the blink of an eye.
I recall in the past GMs would sometimes grant permission to a few other GMs they trust based on a price of ___ (3rd/4th/5th). If you sign him you pay me.
It can make a lot of sense for both sides.

Janko's rights are probably worth nothing at this point eh? I would trade Janko's rights for the opportunity to pitch Hall ahead of time!
Maybe a 5th? I don't know. Wouldn't want to give a higher pick that that in this draft. But I do think there is something worthwhile about pursuing this:
1. It is a good signal to Hall about how much we want him here, and might tip the scales in our favor
2. I think getting in the door with him and making multiple offers before he hits the market will save us from someone scooping him on a big 1 year offer to chase victory.

If the plan 8s to add to this roster to make the team better, perhaps they're waiting to see how Vancouver shakes down their situation. If they snag OEL and keep Markstrom, Toffoli might be a more natural fit for the Flames to pursue.
I guess the long and short of it for me is, if they want Hall, there's other moves that need to be made, if they want Toffoli, nothing has to be done. I honestly think Toffoli would be an amazing fit on the roster as it is right now. You can mix and match the top 2 RW spots with Lindholm and Toffoli and feel pretty good about it.
I just hope Treliving has set his table so his moves aren't a reaction to what other teams are doing, he needs to be the aggressor this off season.

I would give Arizona a 2nd if they cooperated and signed the 8th year then trade him to us if it lowers the cap hit. If Hall wants $70M and over 7 years that is a $10M cap hit but over 8 years it is $8.75M.

or, if he wants $70M over 7 years, we simply don't sign him

I wouldn’t want to pay Hall that much but if the team could lower his cap hit by a million or more by working out a 8th year sign and trade I would be okay with that. Hopefully pushes the cap hit sub 8M

Is there any example where a team traded for negotiation rights to a pending UFA days before free agency and the player actually did not sign with the team just traded for the right?

Dan Hamhuis’ rights were traded twice within a week and he still ended up as a UFA.
