They would be better off buying out MAF.
They wouldn’t save enough cap. They can likely retain 2M and actually get a return back.
There are some teams that will want MAF, just perhaps not at that cap.

WTF?
I'm sorry but no way.
I don't know how you measure heart, but part of it is being committed on and off the ice and leading on and off the ice.
I know this is a subjective argument but I'm stunned that someone would think that Theo has more heart that Iginla.

Rask is 33? It feels like yesterday he replaced Timmy Thomas and he’s still a wet behind the ears kid.
I am so old.

For sure this.
Fleury was also getting top minutes and #1 power play time in his rookie year in the Stanley cup final on a stacked squad. By his third year in the league he was easily our best overall player.
Not even iggy can claim that

Aaron Portzline: CBJ will likely buyout Wennberg if they can’t trade him
Aaron Ward: CAR/TOR talking Andersen. TOR wants Hamilton (non-starter for CAR)

I once saw Jarome Iginla take off his helmet to fight Jarko Ruutu after Byron Ritchie was cheap shotted, in a pre season game.
Iggy played his entire career with 2nd tier centres.
The best winger he got to play with in the 21st century was Michael Cammalleri.
He never played on a team with a true #1 D. Reggie, Dion and Bo were all incomplete, and Gio wasn’t Gio until Iggy left.
He had an elite coach for two and a half seasons. In those seasons, he went to the Finals and won the division.
I don’t think his issues were ever the result of a lack of heart.

The two definitely showed heart in different ways...but when it came to Fleury as a flame...I dont know a bigger heart on his sleeve player. I think it's a difficult thing to compare, but Fleury playing with the autographed Jersey because his game Jersey had too much blood on it, the day he was traded to Colorado (I still have the newspaper clip) and the shootout goal he scored in the preseason are memories that stand out as very symbolic for this. Iggy has similar ones...but they tend not to be as dramatic.
Iggy was one of the big guys that lifted the team on his back and could carry them by himself...but he could also be the floater circling at center ice waiting for the easy play. The determination of Iggy in the 04 run is unparalleled.
Fleury at his size had to fight for every inch and was able to accomplish amazing things in a different league. Fleury today would be a 100 point a year winger...but back in his day he would score despite 250 lb 6-6 defenders water skiing him from center ice in.
Both amazing players...both amazing heart...but I think we either disagree on their heart or one of us watched Fleury play more ..
|
Heart goes beyond playing like you're 6'3 when you're 5'6. It extends to the dressing room and community too. Players using a fan jersey because of blood will never happen anymore because teams make sure they have several jerseys for this very reason, not exactly evidence of heart when 1 could do it and not the other. Iginla fought guys in every series in the 04 playoffs, including Hatcher who was a monster.
You also don't need to exaggerate how big defenders were during Fleury's era, they were actually smaller than they are now.
And you probably did watch Fleury play more than I did, I have never lived in Calgary, and I never saw my first in person NHL game until the turn of the century, so I had to rely exclusively on HNIC and 2&7 to watch games but he was my idol when I was a kid.
I think too many people have kept the hero goggles on for Theo, when the reality is he was probably playing with so much energy because he was coked out of his mind.

Scoring Winger
|
I loved Fluery so much. Reason why I became a fan. Guy was a pitbull. Like a few posters said would stand up to anyone in the league and wore his heart on his sleeve.
Iginla did that too for a period of 4-5 years. After the lockout I found him a different player. An absolute legend for us, and I know there wont be another captain like him.
I still find it appalling that 14 hasn't been retired. Absolute travesty.

Was just thinking, what would Milan Lucic get as a UFA on a 3 year deal today?
Say someone overpaid.... 2.5MM AVV
Fleury is 7MM, Lucic is 5.25MM, but he also takes the spot of a 2.5MM player, so savings aren’t that bad as Lucic is a useful player, especially playoffs.

Fleury played in the NFL?
Aside from maybe Hall Gill and Zdeno Chara, NHL defensemen are not, and were not, that big.

Top minutes in 1989? Nah.
Anyway, Fleury was IMO the most talented Flame ever. Better than Iggy, Newy, Johnny, or Nilsson. But he couldn’t hold it together, Because of his past, and because of his own nature. IMO he had a shot to be a top 10 player in history.

Fleury showed a ton of heart to overcome what happened to him and make it to the NHL. What would you call that, except for heart?
Comparing players in this regard is awfully silly though.
