I've heard from some people in the hockey industry I know that the kings really like Stutzle and would likely take him second.

Yeah that's been the rumour since the draft lottery.

I know Barron’s had a rough go of it with injuries this year, but I still expect him to be a strong top 4 d-man in the NHL. If he’s picked at 19, I can see a lot of people whining that he was ranked much lower, but the amount skill this guy flashed in the years leading up to this year give me confidence he’ll be pretty good.

That being said, draft a Center at 19.

My tiers are:
1-3 (as above)
4-7 (Drysdale, Raymond, Perfetti, Rossi)
8-11 (Hotlz, Askarov, Sanderson) - any of these guys could go in the 4-7 range too
12-21: Lundell, Quinn, Mercer, Zary, Holloway, Jarvis, Amirov, Schneider, Lapierre, Guhle, Bourque)

Flames are definitely lacking in high end skill forwards and it will be difficult to see them pass on any for a defenseman, but the reality is that this regime has been really really good at developing defensemen.

You kind of have to focus on your strengths. The Flames "competitive advantage" is developing defensemen so if there's a good defenseman project available, you almost have to take him over a similar forward or goalie because your organization is more likely to maximize the defenseman.

Flames just have to make sure to turn those defensemen into forwards and goalies.

There is a high probability that Barron is still available by our 2nd rounder. It would be foolish to take him in the first.

it'd be hard for me to pass on a center if one of them drops to Calgary.

Holloway strikes me as a Chris Krieder type; not super blessed with skill but fast, plays hard, hits and could get you 40-50 pts

plus the kid is from Bragg Creek...

Even though I definitely think we need to add to the D prospects this year, I'm going to be immensely disappointed if we take a D in the first round, unless it's one of the top 2 who's dropped (lol unlikely).

I count as many as ten or eleven pretty good defensive prospects as possible selections in the second round. There is only one that I like in the first round at 19, and that's Kaiden Guhle. If he's there take him, but otherwise I think everyone else is a reach.

Before the season started, Barron was touted as a possible top-10 pick. There's plenty of reason to believe that he will end up being a steal. His season was limited to 34 games, so he didn't put up the numbers he was supposed to, but he has high end offensive ability. In his Dminus 1 year, he had 41 pts in 68 g-he should've hovered around a point per game in this, his draft year.

I think he gets picked late first (25-31), or in the first 10 picks of the 2nd.

And instant nickname "Red Barron". These things are important too!

I don’t want this to come off as anything personal as you are correct in our development of d. But Nashville has also been very good at developing defensemen, but have sucked at developing forwards and using their depth at d in Trades attempting to Patch up their F ranks. First round needs to be all about high end skill, preferably at F. Good D can be found in second round and given that d is hard to gauge in 18 year olds, would much rather we go for a high end F which this draft is deep in. Have to make the first round count and given the strength in F for this draft, would be disappointed if we pick a d with our first.

The Flames, since day 1, have also been good at drafting and developing small/skilled forwards.
The defensemen often come in the second round. The small/skilled forwards often come in the later rounds.

It doesn't necessarily have to mean that they should take these types of players in the first round though. Does it?

Lapierre with 4 points in his first game of the season. If he's there at 19 we should take him, no doubt in my mind.

He has home run potential. I’m sure the Flames will have looked into his health issues, if they take the plunge.

I don’t think the goalie or either of the defencemen will be available. That’s my assumption that forms the basis for my thoughts on the Flames at 19.

So, based on Pronman's, Wheeler’s and Bader’s rankings, the prospects I would like the Flames to take at 19 are:
1. Seth Jarvis
2. Connor Zary
3. Rodion Amirov
4. Dawson Mercer
5. Mavrik Bourque
6. Jack Quinn
7. Anton Lundell
The criteria for these players is that all 7 of them are ranked between 9 and 20 on all three lists.

I would also be happy with Hendrix LaPierre for the boom possibility.

I do not want the Flames to pick any other defenceman besides Drysdale or Sanderson. I think such a pick would be a reach based on positional need.

I think the Flames can get good defencemen later on...

Before the season started, Kylington was a potential top 3 pick that year on a couple of lists that I saw, and Andersson was a top 8.

I really like Kylington and I hope that the Flames invest some minutes into him, but there is no way that he is even a top 15 or 20 pick - maybe not even in the first round. Andersson I think moved up into the first round in a re-draft, but I don't think he is a top 8 pick at the moment (without even taking a look to compare).

Definitely makes you think, but fallers usually fall for a reason. Not always, but usually.
