As much as many online suggested watching sports without fans was the same or even better than with, anecdotally amongst friends and co workers and for me it's just not the same. And that became more pronounced as the finals came closer.

It just felt so blah, I couldn't get past it. Felt like exhibition, the fan atmosphere does a lot of for my enjoyment I'm finding.

I've always at least watched the Stanley Cup Finals as tradition, but I didn't even watch a second of it this year and it had nothing to do with being summer, as I'm already into summer mode in late June during regular finals.

Well Gary the cost to produce reruns and poker is pretty much nil plus we didn’t pay billions for the joy of broadcasting your empty arena mens league tournament. Can’t even begin to imagine how dreadful your regular season plans are for entertainment. you think we are paying to broadcast this stuff from all cities for 8 months rather than just from 1 or 2 arenas for two months?

It’s interesting how differently people see it. I didn’t feel like the game suffered for lack of fans at all, and I really liked seeing what was put up on the big screens they added to the arena.

To me, this product was just as good as usual.

They aren't getting out of the TV contract, no matter how many times you say they think they can.

It’s a Canadian sports station. WTF are they gonna show if they try to get out of NHL hockey coverage.

No to mention if they f'd over the NHL, it would mean their only competition will get the TV deal pretty much forever and they will be used as no more than a pawn to up the cost for Bell

At some point in this dialogue my position was read to be Rogers wants out of the contract. I don’t recall actually writing that, but in classic CP form some conversation gets all twisted. I do think Rogers will be saying to the NHL that something needs to come their way for this. Its foolish to think Rogers just goes happily along with this poor excuse for entertainment and endures the lost revenue while nhl owners and players pocket its cash as if its business as usual.

What's even more foolish is you thinking that the poor ratings could help them get out of a contract, when the only way it could is if there were provisions for that. They can't. If they want better ratings, they need to present the games better.

You’ve claimed before that Rogers would sue to get out of the contract. Or unilaterally terminate and the NHL would sue to stop it or for damages.

Islanders/Flyers game 7 was the most watched hockey game in the US in the last 5 years...doom and gloom is a little overblown in here

Smaller hockey markets will have worse numbers...especially in the summer

I think I said pull the plug and litigate if necessary. This conversation started on sep 15 in gm facing new reality thread - your the lawyer so I’m sure you’ve double checked the facts supporting your accusation.

People like yourself read that as cancel the rest of the contract as opposed to just not agreeing to broadcast nhl games until its the product they bargained for- which this isn’t.

So you are suggesting they breach their contract? Do you realize how much money that would cost Rogers?

Somehow you managed to take a terrible stance and make it much worse.

If you have a contract to broadcast games and you “pull the plug”, yeah, that’s cancelling the contract (illegally).

The hockey was fine. Yeah it was a little odd without the crowd, including the fake noise, and there was no home team advantage but we still got the best players in the world playing competitive hockey. Even the mediocre finals matchup wasn’t enough to kill my excitement.

One thing that helped was putting together probably the best in game presentation in sports. The video screens and overall arena layout gave the product a sense of legitimacy and professionalism despite the lack of fans.

Pretty simplistic take for a lawyer who charges $700 per hour.

The NHL would argue breach of contract and seek damages. Nobody is canceling or suggesting contract is void

Who said Rogers would lose that fight?
