Brodie won't get a NMC from the Flames. No chance prior to expansion.

As long as the contract is decent then I would be happy if the Flames re-sign him, I think Brodie will hold out as #5 at the absolute worst at the end of this contract.

Oversimplification. Are people really applauding return of the same core? Or are they applauding the possible return of a good player?
Have you performed a cross analysis to see if people that are happy about Brodie being back are also ones that want Johnny back?
I would be happy to see Brodie return
But I won't be happy if no core changes are made.
I suspect many feel the same. You are drawing a conclusion absent actual information .

I think the "big move" might end up coming down to Gaudreau. It might be the only way to sign Hall if Brodie stays.
Either that, or a Markstrom signing, which I hope doesn't happen because there will likely be better options next year - especially with a looming expansion draft.

I also think he'll get around the 5 to 5.5 range if he stays, just under where Dougie's AAV was at. Limited 10-team NTC in the final two years.
If it weren't for the pandemic and the glut of serviceable free agent defencemen on the market I think he could have gotten 6, but that seems a tall order now.

People are salivating over the idea of signing Hall and trading Gaudreau. Signing Brodie and trading Hanifin is a comparable situation.

I agree he won't but I also don't want him unless the contract is reasonable. If he wants to stay here that badly and is willing it sign 6 years for less than 5 per year than maybe it's worth keeping him. But if TJ leaves money on the table he will want to ensure that he does not get picked in the expansion draft. If he signs a very good deal and is not protected he will be the most likely player selected. So it's either give him and NMC or trade a pick to keep him. I don't think this team is good enough to be trading draft picks to keep the team together. They need to take a step up still.
I don't see Gio being left unprotected unless he falls off a cliff this season. If that happens the Flames won't be a very good team and probably should be moving on from guys like Brodie.
Or we trade Hanifin right before that expansion draft. But I can't see that being a good time to move a player and getting full value.

I don't think it's a bad idea if the return is good for Hanifin. But 27 year old Gaudreau vs. 29 year old Hall is quite a bit different than 23 year old Hanifin vs 30 year old Brodie. 7 years is quite a bit

you thinking for pairings: Geo - Andersson and Valimaki - Brodie or the other way?

Apparently Jimmy Hayes is now saying
To Philly: Gaudreau, Bennett
To Calgary: Voracek, Gostisbehere, Frost
Flames take on over $4M in cap space and give up by far the best player. Can’t be true simply can’t be

Add in 2 years of Gaudreau vs 4 years of Hanifin. If Johnny had 4 years left on his deal no way I trade him and sign Hall right now.

That is truly disgusting.
I like Frost and all but ick.

No way they do this unless Johnny value is that low right now. Frost would be a nice add but he didn't have that good a season in the AHL. I'd struggle to trade Bennett for Frost 1 for 1. Contract and control probably would make me do it but it isn't a guaranteed good trade.

That trade is so bad it would actually make the Oilers look competent in comparison.

Voracek cannot be the piece coming back. Such a scary contract.

I'm not. Gaudreau alone is worth Konecny and Frost, and if he isn't - then you keep him. I would not trade Bennett for Ghost.
If Johnny is moved, I don't want a hockey trade because we're all but guaranteed to lose that trade in the same way almost every team loses the trade when then move the most talented player in the deal for a "better fit" in the return. I want prospects and high picks, not some junk trade for a quantity of lesser players.

I am not convinced Johnny is worth Frost and Konecny considering the Konecny contract and Frost being expansion exempt and NHL ready.
I feel like it is a pretty even trade and if the Flames can sign Hall I love the look of the top 9
Hall-Monahan-Konecny
Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm
Dube-Frost-Mangipane

It's debatable if Johnny has more trade value that Konecny, but regardless of where you fall on that debate, the difference is not Frost.
