WHEN WILL SOMETHING HAPPEN!!! LOL
I guess the draft is coming, but I am shocked that the Flames have done nothing. No resigning current players, trades or anything other than keeping Ward.

Makes sense, Brodie is Toronto's back up plan, and Calgary is Brodie's back up plan.
And for all we know, Brodie may be Calgary's back up plan.

not unique to the Flames; there have been 8 trades since return to Play. Other than Kapanen and maybe Staal, there has been nothing too big

Funny to see so many fans here applauding the return of the same core next year. If it ain't broke, right?

Simply because they don't seem to fall in love with their own players because they have such a short history. Oh, Pietro is available? Well, let's fire off this player for a pick, that player for a pick, and boom - we have the cap space.
It's just them being active and not conservative. Hockey management as a whole is way too conservative (Tree certainly has been for a number of years now).

According to Steinberg, Calgary is Brodie's top priority, not his backup plan.

It will really, really suck if this team comes back with little to no change for next season. They were hard to watch for large swaths of the last year. No fun, not enough winning, no players that are really electrifying or even look like they're trying hard (outside of Tkachuk.)
I would not be happy with bringing back the same group of guys.

Now now, what the player says is irrelevant compared to media speculation.

Brodie not wanting to move out of his comfort zone? Not a good sign for a multi-year deal.

Well nobody wants to see Hamonic return. Flames have 5 UFA's on the back end and for me, Brodie is the only one I want to see back. In fact, he and Andersson are the two defensemen I feel strongly about returning.
Sure makes it easier to deal Hanifin if Brodie returns.

You have to wonder when that starts to play in for players that sign there. Speculation a couple weeks ago that they were more than content to trade away a player like Schmidt to make roof for Krug. No doubt they would do the same for Pietroangelo.

Or he has been here his entire career and has a well established family support structure. I know it is a business, but sometimes what is best for the family plays a part in things.

How would that be different than any other long term deal where a player doesn't switch teams?

When changing the core, or changing the makeup of the team, you don't exclude good hockey players simply because they've been here already. Brodie has been our best defender in both of the last two playoffs - and when you think of it, has been our best playoff defender every time we've made the playoffs during this era.
To me, that's not the piece you need to change. Brodie returning would make me happy.
Hamonic not returning? That makes sense. He's had an awful run in Calgary. Pretty much every defensive partner he's played with has seen them under-perform as a pairing - and yeah, I bring up Hamonic because I just want to crap all over that trade again. That trade was awful.
"Core" changes are overdue up front, and in the net. I think the goaltending will be my biggest measuring point of a successful/unsuccessful off-season. Tree needs to finally fill the position properly.

I look forward to seeing you apply this insinuation consistently to every pending UFA from here on out.

Likely what is going to happen.
|
OEL at 50% would be around a cap hit slightly over 4.1M. OEL at that cap hit for 6 years, or what ever it is, would be a coup and not worth taking on the anchor that is Eriksson. I guess what I am saying, is expect the worse and enjoy some cap hell in the future.

Even though Brodie isn't a UFA signing that is new to the team he still falls into that category of mid-range UFA signing who is now 30 years old and fits in that category of player that more than likely regresses for most of his contract.
I can't see Brodie signing for less than 5 years and less than 5 per year. I also look at Brodie who is a skilled skating dman but is not elite skilled and is not a smooth skater. He's been great for us but it's time to move on. This team clearly needs to add higher end talent rather than mid-range talent. If they can't get someone elite via trade or via UFA they will need to draft it. IMO that means a 1-2 year retool where you move guys out for picks and up and coming talent.
Signing Brodie will more than likely come with a NMC and more than likely blocks any big time additions. Maybe Treliving is waiting for UFA/Draft day to make that call and if he misses out he signs him but Brodie resigning will more than likely block any big time signings/trades next summer too.
