If you put OEL in a situation like Boston, then yeah, he has the team to extract his full potential and mask his deficiencies. Not so sure Vancouver has that. But, he wants Vancouver. So best of luck.

Behind a paywall, but Jon Willis wrote an article in the Athletic titled Buyer Beware OEL. It was interesting because he clearly went into the writing with many of the misgivings that we are seeing here.
Quote:
I’m surprised to write this – it isn’t the outcome I expected when I started collecting data – but I’ve come to like the idea of betting on Ekman-Larsson. The best-case scenario is excellent, and even the median outcome works, especially given the structure of his contract.
|
He does a lot of comparables, from best to worst, and having the contract front loaded makes the last two years tradable/buyoutable. It's an interesting read, and takes away some of the doom and gloom.

If OEL wanted instant success, then he best go to Boston where he could flourish as the go-to offensive d-man for Boston (now that Krug is gone) and having McAvoy as his d partner.

I can see him being pretty successful getting to play behind Hughes.

OEL is all that and is a consistent 40+ point defenceman on a terrible offensively challenged Yotes team.
Krug is a undersized defenceman that is sheltered playing on a perennial contender with a couple of HOF players.
Does Krug put up the same numbers in Arizona when he's the go-to guy on defence? the answer is no.
OEL is 21st in hits by a defenceman and plays with an edge...
no sane GM in this league would pick Krug over OEL.
if Krug is the better option Boston would've just re-signed him.

Boston's window is starting to close too.
Chara is like 50 yrs old, Bergeron 35, Krecji 33, Rask 32, Marchand 31.

Perhaps I misspoke when I said Krug was better, but the difference in quality between them isn't huge. OEL often looks lost in his own zone, and despite having so many hits, I wouldn't say he "plays with an edge".

I like OEL more than most on here and even I think Krug is better than OEL.

No you aren't. I mean I don't think it's a massive gap, and I think it depends what style of play is best for you. But if I have the choice between OEL and Krug at the contract, I would generally choose Krug as I think him being better offensively trumps OEL being more physical, unless you have a team with little to no physicality on the backend.

I am at the bargaining step of my grief on this matter.

I was just about to post this.
I'd say this was their last kick at the can.
Also this playoffs showed how much they depend on Rask. Their fans always rag on him but he's Top 5 in goaltending IMO. But he's getting older and who knows how long he can keep it up.

Friedman says that he’s heard from team-side and player-side sources that the door is not closed on Flames + Brodie.

I am guessing the market on Brodie and Toronto isn't there, so he has to consider all alternatives. And what better one than the one he knows?

Friedman also said he knows Toronto likes him (cites the Kadri trade), and that if Pietrangelo does end up in Vegas/or doesn’t reach the market, that Toronto is likely to add two players in that next tier (used Brodie, DeMelo, Gudas and I think someone else as an example)
