Whitney clearly unhappy with this blindside, stating that Nation members had ample opportunity to voice concerns and that people who directly had homes demolished were given real estate elsewhere. He also essentially refused to sit down to talk with the reporter who asked to do so, citing the fact that she is not a Nation member. Zoom in on the kid's hair on the ground one more time, Global camera guy. And that's a wrap.

Ho-lee sheeeit. Was probably supposed to be "young person from the reserve talking about what the band will be able to do with the investment blah blah blah" and he just blindsided them. Amazing.

Already a response from the premier's office in the form of this tweet, reiterating the fact that the Nation overwhelmingly voted in favour of the 2013 deal that allowed for the his project to move forward. As stated previously, the deal includes a land exchange on the west side of the reserve that gives the Nation more land than Alberta took for the road, and also gave the nation an immediate $275 million cash.

This is of course no consolation for the man whose house was demolished on Weaselhead Road.

Eh - clearly a political stunt - those houses on Weaselhead were absolutely falling apart and all dilapidated - borderline unlivable from the looks. I can guarantee they got more land & house in exchange, plus the whole $275M for a band of 2,000 people side of things.

Yeah I mean I don't doubt that, and it's not really the story here.

The story is the blindside, the relative elegance of his remarks, and the gesture at the end.

Video of his remarks: https://globalnews.ca/news/7369831/c...-jason-kenney/

Kenney was embarrassed? I see nothing wrong here then!

I mean, it doesn't have much to do with Kenney and was long done already.

Barriers will start coming down at 2 pm.

Not sure how Kenney was embarrassed. I am not a fan but I am a realist. That looked like an internal conflict within the Nation and clearly the target was was the Chief. I hope this story is investigated as that was a profound gesture for a young man to make and it seems unlikely he would do this without some cause.

I'm the as anti-Kenney as they come but even I know that one isn't on Kenney. This was a decision for the ring road long before he came into the picture.

Ahhh, I disagree. It's the UCP who's been making it clear that Kenney was all-in on this federally.

Here's the announcement from Kenney from 2015 that Kenney made sure to post again today:

https://twitter.com/jkenney/status/6...822405/photo/1

I don't blame Kenney for this because I don't think there's any blame to be had. Deals were made that benefited the 'entire' population at the expense of a small number of other people (both on and off the Nation). It's unfortunate but it happens.

But if there's anything to be blamed, Kenney should take it since it's him and his party that have been acting like this was his doing.

I don't know about a double left turn from the exit onto NB Crowchild though; I think there's only one through lane onto Crowchild north, with the other lane on the overpass being a dedicated turn lane from Crowchild onto WB Glenmore (Plus Crowchild at that point is two lanes from WB Glenmore > NB Crowchild, which is only 3 lanes, so there isn't room on Crowchild for two more lanes coming from the overpass).
One thing that would be easy to implement and would make things flow through there easier would be to remove the the left turn from WB Glenmore onto SB Crowchild and remove the left turn from NB Crowchild to WB Glenmore. Now traffic could be free flowing out of Lakeview and from EB Glenmore. Southbound Glenmore into Lakeview to could be reduced to a yield instead of a light with them passing through gaps in the EB Glenmore/NB Crowchild merging traffic.

The vehicles that normally use the left turn from WB Glenmore into Lakeview can use the overpass at 50th Ave and double back or they can use 37th. To get from Lakeview onto WB Glenmore you again use the overpass at 50th Ave and double back on Crowchild or go to Richard Road.

Him taking credit I'm not surprised. He loves gluing himself to public announcements. My gut instinct here is that any grievances with the path of the ring road by local residents is an issue with First Nations leaders that may have been unresolved. However, I don't know exact specifics, just speculating.

Just drove it southbound. Already more traffic than expected out here. It's absolutely gorgeous with the tree colours between Glenmore and Anderson, I suggest driving it in the next couple days even if you don't care about road stuff. I'll check out the weave gongshow on my way back later.

As a former Lakeview resident I wouldn’t love it, but I’d understand that the alternative sucks too (major reduction in light timing).

The challenge would be getting from the 50th exit into SB crowchild over to the far left lane. Doable, but you probably don’t want to have a bunch more traffic doing it...

There is always the Flander's Ave overpass as well which dumps you onto Crowchild further north and gives you more room/time to get into the left lane.

When we were purchasing a house Lakeview was on the list as a desirable community because we lived in Altadore at the time. We never really went down into Lakeview with the exception of the occasional trip to North Glenmore Park. We started looking at houses there and started to drive in and out of the community and it very quickly got dropped from the desirable list because of the crappy access. It just felt like a huge struggle every time we were down there regardless of what day of the week it was or what time of day.

I cannot believe what just happened, to be honest.

"In this bag I carry the dirt from my land that you have bulldozed and paved with concrete. Today is not a day to be shaking hands and smiling. My mom is at home crying, and she will continue to cry."
I totally support him standing up and doing this... but I also support a city having infrastructure that benefits hundreds of thousands of people, and sometimes that involves buying land and moving people. Interesting anyways...

No. You won't be able to reach highway 1 via the ring road until 2024.
