Bass has been roughed up lately and his ERA is up over 3 now
Kay got roughed up and was optioned
Yamaguchi has his ERA down under 4 after that terrible start but the Yankees destroyed him a few games ago and it ballooned again. Hopefully just a blip.
Borucki, SRF and Perez have nice arms and stuff, especially out of the pen, but they walk too many batters.
It would be really nice to get Pearson and Romano back 100% healthy for some flame throwing high leverage situations. Murphy also looked like he might be an option going forward.
Anyways, hopefully just a product of that terrible series in Yankee stadium where they scored runs at will for 3 days and not something that keeps spiraling out of control going forward.

They got worn out. But they are getting rested this week.
How they pitched last week doesn't matter - the only thing that matters is how they pitch next week.
But yes, it would help immensely if they could get Pearson and/or Romano back.

For a reliever just a single bad outing can seriously skew their ERA in a season this short. No Jays RP will reach 30 IP this year and at 30 IP, just 1 earned run will make a difference of 0.3 in their ERA.
I think the best thing to do to evaluate a reliever, especially this season is their WHIP. I found a chart that shows < 1.10 WHIP is great, 1.11-1.25 is above average, 1.26-1.32 is average. But even that will be seriously skewed by a bad outing. For example, for Yamaguchi his WHIP is 1.57 currently, but without that Yankees game, it would just be 1.30 despite his slow start.
I think with anyone this year you have to go in and look at their game logs and see if their poor numbers are from a couple bad outings, or if they really are "average" for them.
For me, if I were the one deciding the playoff roster, I'd eliminate their worst two outings and rank them without those, to compare how they look compared to their overall numbers.

Also, it isn't like an ERA of 3 is bad, it's still quite good. They weren't all going to stay at zero forever. Mean reversion was inevitable.

They were saying during the broadcast a couple games ago, the Jay's bullpen has been really good. Considering their closer has been gone basically the entire season.
Jay's starter's have struggled, I believe they mentioned not 1 starter has made it to the 7th inning.
Until the starter's can go further in the game....
They will simply run out of relief pitchers, as they have over-used the relief pitchers and run out of options.
(i.e. a position player has pitched twice this season)

Montoyo has clearly been told to prevent any pitcher from going through the batting order more than 2 times. Good luck getting past 5-6 innings without doing that.

The Jay's starters are getting hit hard when they go threw the order a 3rd time.
I guess it does not help that 3 out of the 5 starters were all on the IR for a lengthy time (i.e. Shoemaker, Pearson and Thornton)

For sure. What would your playoff roster look like? Assuming they cut it down to 13/14 pitchers, because IIRC the playoffs are a 26 man roster and we will need 3-4 bench players.
For me:
C: Jansen, Kirk
1B: Guerrero, Telllez*
2B: Villar, Panik
SS: Bichette
3B: Biggio, Shaw
LF: Gurriel
CF: Grichuk
RF: Hernandez
SP: Ryu, Walker, Shoemaker, Ray
RP: Stripling, Bass, Dolis, Yamaguchi, Pearson*, Cole, Romano*, Borucki, Roark, Merryweather*
* = if healthy
Injury replacements
Position Players:
1. Santiago Espinal
2. Jonathan Davis
Pitchers:
1. Sean Read-Foley
2. Anthony Kay
3. TJ Zeuch
4. Chase Anderson

Kirk getting the back to back start.
Which he should be.
Hopefully Jansen can regain some of his earlier form going forward. It'd be amazing to have two stud young catchers in the fold on the MLB team. He'd make a solid trade chip too if Kirk proves he is the real deal over a larger sample size.
Gerrit Cole vs. Roark again too. Please don't let the same #### go down as last time.

Roark sucks pretty bad this year, I'd hate having him on the playoff roster but I doubt they'll keep him off. I mean who is going to feel confident with Roark coming out of the pen in a close game?
As for injury replacements I'd be bring in Patrick Murphy before I'd bring in Zeuch, just because he has that high 90's heat with one very high end secondary that could play up well out of the pen.

An ERA over 3 is not good for a high leverage reliever. The best of the best keep their ERA's below 2 usually, but yeah you guys are right, such a small sample size this year that just one bad inning can throw a guys numbers right out of whack. A lot of them took a big hit in that ridiculous series against the Yankees last week. It happens. Hopefully they get back on track.

Your best guy(s), sure. But not the whole bench.
And the Jays' 2 best relievers are both hurt

Roark goes 2-0 on Judge, then 2-0 on Hicks.
And Hernandez still hasn't figured out how to play balls off the wall.
Result: 1-0 Yankees with 1 one out

Ha. Roark is just so bloody awful. This might actually be the last time we see him in a blue jays uniform. He’s signed for next year but at this point you just can’t let him cost you games anymore.

Combined with the fact that starters are throwing less than 50% fastballs, and as a result aren't throwing enough strikes and are walking too many batters.
Great recipe for having short starts.

The thing is... that was actually a pretty good inning for him. But even when he pitches his best, he seems to give up runs every inning.
He is just unwatchable.

Tanner Roark has an amusing body shape. He makes me believe I could be a professional athlete.

Roark even sucks in MLB The Show. When I started a new franchise last Christmas it didn’t take me long to trade him.

I'm calling 3 2/3 innings and 7 runs for Roark...
You want the over or the under?
