Non Covid times? Yeah definitely. Just can't see that happening right now. A lot of these UFAs should be taking covid deals. I.E. one or two year contracts and then capitalize when things get back to status quo.

Even with Covid i would be ok with offerring Pietro a 10 x 7 contract. #1 RD that will likely keep up level of play for at least 6 years of that contract.

I can remember Pat Ribble and Kari Eloranta, but I gotta google Anders Eriksson.

I’m old enough to have watched all the players you guys have been talking about.
Forbort is no Tabby or Brathwaite, Freddy’s name was chanted through the Dome During his hey day. I don’t recall the chants of FORBORT FORBORT last season😁

Pretty risky with a short career...not to mention you won't be getting your full salary anyway.

Lol. I was closer to 10. Still, he was memorable even then. And I have re-watched games from those playoff series against the Sharks and Blackhawks, they're readily available online. What I remember about Forbort is just how frequently he lost coverage of his guys in his own zone.
That was all Anders Eriksson seemed to do in the d-zone and it constantly came back to bite the Flames in the 2008 first round, with his giveaway and lost coverage leading up to Setoguchi's GTG in Game 7 and a similar play resulting in Pavelski's 4-2 goal. And yet he was constantly out there even late in the third, much like how Forbort was relied upon to PK and tandem with Giordano late. He averaged over 15 minutes a night at even strength!

Well I dont know what else to say really. Nobody is going to get the high watermark in free agent contracts. Even with escrow.
So what do the agents recommend for their player? Take a guaranteed long term contract but likely lose a million or two a year or sign a short term fair cap hit deal and cash in when business is back to normal.
Maybe we see some crazy contract structures where the first two years are as low as you can go but back to market value years 3 to 7.
Who knows. Sucks to be a UFA this year.

I would much rather have Pietrangelo at 9.25 than OEL at 8.25.
The different in quality is far greater than the difference in cap.

I'm talking in the sense than Freddie and and Tabby were average players, while Eriksson was an abortion on blades.

If we could sign Pietro and Markstrom I wouldn't even be mad about missing out on Hall.
But if we could unload Hanifin and Gaudreau in big ticket future trades and sign all three of them, that would be an absolute dream come true lol.
Almost got it price wise.

Why are you so keen on unloading the guy who showed great chemistry with Andersson and stands a good chance of being our 1st pairing LD next season?

You still want to be able to sign at least two, but really three, extras.
Maybe Rittich going and a less expensive fourth line center could get that done.

If that is his starting point, you would have to think he knows it won't be the final number after negotiations.
Then again, some teams may be willing to drive the Brinks truck up to his house. In most years, I would say it was certain, but with the COVID thing going on, it's quite possible this is a poker game that free agents do not want to play.
Personally, I think one strategy for free agents would be to take a discount over a long contract, but get as much money as possible up front in signing bonuses. That way, they can at least maximize the investment potential right now.
Of course, that would require an owner that is willing to fork out money under these circumstances.

No kidding, Hanifin is 23 his best years are still ahead of him, and his sub 5 mill contract is great value. Andersson and Hanifin are the core of the Flames defense moving forward.

Despite what Dino and Enoch love to hammer on, Demko was actually fantastic in a back up role last season. He didn't struggle until Markstrom got hurt. How Demko performed in the play-offs wasn't some "out of nowhere" thing like with Murray or Binnington. Demko is supposed to be that good. Long story short, Canucks would rather sell low on Demko to see if he can do it consistently next season. To do that, they need Markstrom.

He was amazing in his playoff stint, nobody can take that away from him.
But fantastic as a backup?
Five on five he was ranked 51st out of 59 goaltenders that played 750 minutes this year in GSAA with a -8.17. In all situations his numbers improve to about -3.9, but that's basically David Rittich with less work and an easier work load.
Before Markstrom went down Demko had a .904 save percentage, after Markstrom went down Demko had a .906 save percentage, not much of a change, but the change was positive.
On the season he had a .889 save percentage against teams with a win% of .6 or more.
His degree of difficulty before the injury was an average opponent win% of .547, and with Markstrom out it was .573
He was amazing against Vegas, and he could just be a great goaltender and Vancouver's number one guy for a decade.
But his regular season wasn't amazing from any stat I could find.

It was interesting that the sticking point for Peitro signing in St. Louis already wasn't the $7.7M/year offer but the structure of the contract. The only stipulation that I would want on the contract as a front office is that the NMC is lifted/altered for the last three years.
Hall has made $6M/season for the majority of his career. Bumping up to $7M, considering the flat cap, is probably where he would land, and much like Peitro, the only stipulation that I would need on structure would be a removal of trade restrictions on the back end of the contract.
At 30 years old, I think that Markstrom ends up somewhere at $5M/5years, much like Lehner.
It is a good time to be signing UFAs. There is a realization that there is a three year window where it's going to be hard to cash in. The big leverage is a player deciding where he wants to go, but I don't think that there are going to be outlandish bidding wars.
Maybe a GM will get inventive in a way that we haven't seen yet.

I think Markstrom or any plus 30 player is a concern for many teams. It’s possible that the next season will be significantly delayed or cancelled so you could be signing a player who is 32-33 the next time they suit up. Taylor Hall would be in that category as well.
The Flames need to focus more then ever on acquiring young talent and potential.

re: trading a d man.
The Flames need to bring D men in and not ship any out. If they made no changes but signing rfas next seasons D line up would be.
Hanifin Andersson
Giordano - Valimaki ( playing his off hand)
Kyllington - Yelleshin
Mackey
There is a glaring lack of muscle and right hand shots. A big right shot D man is likely a top off season priority.
Just riffing off that idea, it makes me think that unless Brodie takes a huge pay cut he will not be coming back.

I don’t think there is any factual basis for Hanifin being in the trade forum, it’s just a couple if Canuck trolls who should be worrying about their own cast of characters playing defence that are seriously overrated.

Not at all keen- but if we want to sign Pietro something needs to change on our backend, and I keep getting shouted down for proposing Gio trades. Since I like Andersson better than Hanifin, it's Hanifin that had to go to make it work.
It actually would work out WAYYY better if we could trade Gio and sign Pietro.
