Riiiight. With Petterson and Hughes as well as Demko coming up for new contracts in a year. Who are they trading? What will they pay Cernak?

I knew there was something behind the Florida smoke. I think we should see if we can land ekblad. Cernak certainly wouldn't be bad either

Why not?!

This is the exact thread for that sort of thing. Just qualify it with whatever you want first.

I don't believe this for a second. Petterssen is a point/GP centreman, and Hughes matched Boeser's career high in scoring as a defenseman in his rookie season.

It doesn't matter what the terms for either player look like, they are both getting paid ALOT more than Boeser on their next deals. It is delusional wishful thinking to imagine otherwise.

Even if they did, that’s probably 12-14 million for the two of them. Plus Boeser comes up again a year later.

They also will either sign Markstrom to a big contract or pay a veteran free agent like Talbot to come in.

They’d need to shed salary to get Ekblad IMO.

To me this off-season is going to be an off-season worth spending futures in. There are so many teams with apparently huge pieces available - some aiming to cut costs. It is shaping up to be one hell of an opportunity to add to/alter the core pieces going forward.

I hope we get some of the big free wins via free agency (Markstrom & Hall), but if we're involved on players like Ekblad that require some future assets? You go for it. Or if things start opening up for hockey deals - like an Ekblad for Gaudreau trade? Ah this is going to be a fun October.

And we're getting a switch to retros full-time/possibly a new 3rd jersey? The world may be falling apart but at least the off-season will be entertaining!

No, no to spending futures. They've done enough and gotten Lindholm and Hanifin out of it. Thats it. Thats all they got. The Hamonic gamble was extremely devastating .

Every fanbase believes that their stars are special, and are open to taking a home team discount in order to help the team win.

The reality however, is that every player has an agent, and those agents have clients in every city, and have to negotiate with every GM. Agents STRONGLY push their clients away from settling - it is bad for the market overall. The message is always the same and always clear: your career is short, and an injury could cut it short at any time - you MUST get what you are worth. The team shouldn't need you to compromise in order for them to win, and the players on every other team are not compromising. So you shouldn't either.

Having said that, the one argument in favour of short contracts is that money is going to be tight for a couple years. It is certainly reasonable to make the argument that it makes make sense to take a lower-pay, 2 year deal, and then look to get paid afterwards.

But that is different than hoping for a I'll-take-less-to-help-the-team-win discount.

I believe it because of the current flat cap and upcoming TV deals. Bridge deals ending in 3 years could be ideal for them. I don't believe is has anything to do with going hard for it.

That $500,000 difference in take-home that he was talking about was in reference to Ontario. In AB, it is about half that.

Also, homes are a lot cheaper here than in Toronto (or Vancouver). AB holds up pretty well (relatively) on the take home pay front.

Alan Walsh blew Burkies statements out of the water afterwards. Saying Canada has many loopholes to stickhandle around taxes.
