Monahan is the Flames leading point getter in the playoffs, over the last 4 seasons.(30 games-21 Pts)

Letang has already said publicly he thinks he is going to get traded. I think Rutherford will definitely look at shedding his cap.

Given Monahan's well documented struggles I'm surprised to see so many people opposed to using him to acquire a 26-year old RHD, with tremendous offensive skill, that can play physical, and defend reasonably well. There's an incredible premium on guys of his ilk and there's a clear vacuum in the Flames system that he could fill.

As others have said, there's so much more that would go into the big picture, ie. what other pieces are involved, other trades the Flames make, who they acquire in free agency, and the expansion draft, but I think you'd be crazy to reject acquiring Dumba outright.
...And significantly more so on a player like Monahan.

For example lets just take a look at the free agent crop this season - how many top six centers do you see available?

I don't see one legit top six talent available at the position, and do you know why that is? It's because it's the hardest position to acquire and fill accordingly..

The top available point producing center from last year that is available is 34 year old Carl Soderberg who is coming off a 35 point season. He is then followed by 40 year Joe Thornton.

Now let's take a look at the available top four defensemen just this summer alone.. Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug, Tyson Barrie, TJ Brodie, Sami Vatanen, Chris Tanev, Travis Hamonic, Dylan Demelo, Kevin Shattenkirk, Erik Gustaffson..

Is Dumba an incredibly talented and valuable piece? Yes.
Does Dumba fill some organizational holes at the moment? Yes.
Is Matt Dumba worth trading your top line center and consistent 30 goal scorer for? Absolutely not.

It's just not a trade that works for us unless they add a ridiculous plus that would simply not be realistic.

According to Minny reporter Russo, the Canucks are hot after Dumba.

Give Minnesota Eriksson or Sutter, 2021 1st, 2021 2nd for Dumba. That would be a smart move for both sides in my eyes. Minnesota gets to continue building through the draft.

he seems to be trying to round out his game (200 foot game) but has 21 points in 30 career playoff games - it's not like he completely disappears.

LeBrun rumors/speculation:

Jets have a genuine interest in Dumba and wonders if a Wild could live with Ehlers as the return.

Canes getting many calls on James Reimer because his $2.25 million signing bonus has been paid out and is only owed $850k for the rest of the season.
One of Canes targets might be Kuemper and speculates Reimer plus another asset might be a fit for Arizona

Devils are approaching a crossroads with Palmieri. Going to have to make a decision in the offseason of what they can re-sign Palmieri for vs what they can get for him in trade.

Canucks think they might be finally be able to move Loui Eriksson who is owed only $5 million over the final 2 years of his contract.
Might entice a low salary team to bite if the Canucks include another asset.

I wouldn't be happy at all with a Monahan trade for Dumba. I share the opinion that we should keep Monahan and try to augment the roster in other ways.

That being said, I don't hate the value proposed in a Monahan+19 for Dumba+Beckman+9 trade.
Still think it makes the team worse.

Trading a top-6 centre, which Monahan most certainly is, for a defenseman is a bad decision.

Stop acquiring defensemen at a premium. Imagine if we’d paid the Dougie/Hamonic acquisition costs in pursuit of centres or a goalie.

That would be great but JB said he won't be dealing any draft picks.

Everyone thinks it's Boeser for Dumba but ex Canuck scout Brackett is with Minny now.

Minny could be going after our prospects.

Rathbone is one prospect i see Brackett would like to have, and he's really high on Gaudette as well.

I could see a Sutter, Rathbone, Gaudette package. Brackett really likes those two.

He had 8 of those points this year, would anyone say Monahan had a "good" playoffs?

Either way, I'm not saying to trade Monahan for Dumba straight up, or even to trade him at all. I'm saying that it's surprising people are so down on Dumba's value relative to Monahan, or even the notion of bringing Dumba in without knowing what other moves could be coming.

I fully back the Dougie pick up. But agree 100% on Hamonic, and thinking about it has now ruined my day.

No to Monahan for Dumba one for one, BUT, if the Wild add one of the following pieces, I might consider it:

- Joel Eriksson Ek, a younger and bigger and cheaper version of Backlund, this guy is an impact player even though his stats don't show it;
- Luke Kunin, a similar player to Bennett;
- Jordan Greenway, big power forward who can skate;
- first round pick.

Obviously trading Monahan, means you move Lindholm to centre. Ward is constantly comparing Lindholm to Bergeron.

Centre ice group of Lindholm, Backlund, Bennett, and Eriksson Ek is actually pretty good. Those are 3 very good 2 way centres and a physical centre in Bennett.

People need to adjust their expectations. Monahan isn't Mackinnon or McDavid. He is still very valuable.

We need another top 6 forward, ideally a center, to come back if we trade Monahan and the only we can do that is we sign Hall and trade Gaudreau.

I am also leery of just plugging in Lindholm at center when he played on the wing for most of his career.

Friedman rumors/speculation:
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...d-trade-block/

on Dumba:
most obvious interest would come from Winnipeg, but they can't give up a centre unless another team is involved
Dumba is a fit for the Canucks but a centre won't be part of the return and not convinced they want give up Boeser
Calgary could give up a centre
Fenton tried to get Nylander but the Leafs weren't inclined then and probably still are not

Markstrom will consider giving up expansion draft protection in re-signing with Vancouver (so Canucks can protect Demko) but will want contract concessions in return.

New Panthers GM says that no one told him to cut payroll.
Friedman speculates Zito will listen on Barkov (but no chance he moves him), Ekblad, and Huberdeau. Will explore moving big tickets on blue line to create flexibility.

Calgary, Carolina, Chicago, Edmonton, and SJ have asked about Kuemper
Boston, Calgary, Edmonton have checked in on OEL.
Colorado (and probably more) has checked on Hjalmarson

Danault's name is out there and there is interest but not convinced Bergevin wants to move him

Habs considered Dubnyk before acquiring Allen.

Teams are waiting to see what TB might do to be cap compliant

I personally think you a dreaming here pal.

Rathbone was listed as your 7th best prospect by Pronman in his organizational rankings (9th overall but Petterson and Hughes are not prospects). This is a Harvard Dman with 2 years until he can be a UFA.

So that, a pure cap dump in Sutter and Gaudette is a decent piece but I feel like that is a brutal trade for the Wild.

I feel like Demko might need to be part of the return which should be fine if Markstrom is signed. I could also see the interest in Dumba being used to try and squeeze Tanev on a re-sign.

Of that list, Saad, Bishop and Johnson only interest me. But Bishop is a big question mark. He's missing a lot of time.

If you are competing with the Jets on offering Ehlers or the Nucks offering Boesser then Monahan doesn't get it done. Minny would want Lindholm and let the Flames keep their strength at Centre.
