My wife and I are a mixed couple... NEVER had an issue anywhere in Western Canada, Montana, California, Hawaii, Mexico, Japan, or even travelling in Africa. Of course when are with other mixed couples no outsider can possibly figure out who belongs to who, spouse and kids included!

Plus my complaint about the officer has gone nowhere.

Additional testing would not accomplish anything except extract money out of your bank account.

I don't think you get police body cam footage sent to you as a file to do whatever you please if you request it, do you?

I know there is a lot of criticism (lots warranted) in this thread for CPS, but that article shows that while parts of the negative practices from down south bleed into our policing (militarization, intimidation etc), we are still just fundamentally different, and I'm damn glad for it.

The Calgary Police Service has set up checkstops during the month of September to crack down on improperly maintained vehicles — and it has prompted a strong reaction from Calgarians on social media.

The Safer Vehicles Initiative is intended to ensure that vehicles meet safety standards and comply with the Traffic Safety Act, according to CPS.

It involves inspecting cars at checkstops for issues such as bald tires, windshield cracks, improperly tinted windows and burned-out tail lights and headlights. About 1,000 vehicles have been stopped so far.

This is enforcement I can get behind. I wonder if they are also giving tickets for overly loud exhausts...

I remember seeing that $162 'washer fluid' ticket on Twitter. One of the CPS Social Media constables looked into it and answered. Apparently that vehicle had 3 infractions on it, so it got the one ticket for all three problems, and it was not a ticket for just 'not keeping my windshield washer fluid topped off', as it was presented on Twitter.

This will probably disproportionately impact lower income people, and giving Calgarians tickets for cracked windshields seems exceptionally cruel, but safety standards exist for a reason I guess. Hopefully they’re using some nuance here.

It’s called the ‘Safer’ Vehicles Initiative, not the bylaw initiative.

I can get behind this...sort of. I can’t get behind window tint thing.

Guy with bald tires, poor brakes, shot struts, worn out wheel bearings and ball joints will what? More than likely get a warning about the tires? But a perfectly maintained vehicle with tint gets ticket. Don’t like that.

I don't agree with that at all, what makes a police officer an automotive expert? They are opening the hood and checking things over? What is considered low washer fluid? How much has to be remaining? This is a cash grab.

Also if Alberta was serious about vehicle safety we'd have a mandatory inspections like most places do.

Cruddy part is I can't imagine those checkstops can do much for the loud exhausts - those are local bylaw infractions, not provincial laws that are covered by the Traffic Safety Act like"busted up ride"/tinting would be. They might be able to catch the idiots with fart cannons dragging on the ground from their ricer-mobiles, but a lot of the exhaust related mods aren't "condition" issues.

"The majority of people stopped don't get tickets"

So 49.99% could be driving away with a ticket.

You've never seen vehicles with massive tires beyond their wheel arches, no mud flaps, broken lights, bald tires etc? You don't need to be an automotive expert to spot those things.

Are there perhaps issues with a few things they are checking? Maybe, I don't know nearly enough about the program to comment, and neither do you.

And I know this is controversial, but I'm happy about the window tint thing, too. I hate that. Not being able to see where a driver is looking as a pedestrian and cyclist is frustrating and dangerous.

Yeah the window tint thing I have no problem with. People do it with most knowing it's against bylaw. If you get a ticket, that's the risk you took. And this is coming from someone who drove a vehicle with tinted windows and got a ticket. You make the choice, you accept the consequences.

Don't want a ticket? Don't have a broken down piece of garbage, or make illegal modifications. This isn't complicated.

"Oh no, the police are working to make our roads safer! Screw them!"

What things can be assessed by anyone, and what things require an auto tech. Give me a list. One example, many cars don't come with mudflaps does the officer have a database to check what cars should have them what cars don't?

Then why the #### are you commenting? What an asinine thing to say.

This is not a program to actually improve safety, as I said to do that we need yearly vehicle inspections. Not a perfect system but it takes a lot of dangerous vehicles off the road. Also, Alberta has NO emissions testing a poorly running engine is horribly polluting. And we have many of those on the road.

Right, it is that simple. You either have perfect vehicle or a broken down piece of ####.
