To me, you have to become something worth maintaining before worrying about maintaining it - a top end goaltender for 2-5 years is a huge piece if this team wants to win a cup in that time frame. That's why if we do deal a 1st for Kuemper, I'll be on board.
I like our championship chances with Kuemper in net more than I do with Markstrom.
Trading 1st round picks is a risky business - and overspending in trades while doing so is destructive (the Hamonic trade). Firing off a bottom half 1st round pick for an elite goalie though? I do that - especially if I'm viewing Kuemper as 2 years on a sweet value contract plus at least 2 more on an extension when the time comes.
|
Kuemper hasn’t been elite for long though. He certainly has been solid since LA picked him up off the scrap heap.
I think he is a decent goalie but I also think Markstrom is a decent goalie as well.
As a prospect poor team I prefer to not give up another 1st especially for a 30 year old who is only signed for 2 years when there is potential for a comparable goalie to be had in free agency.

Markstrom's problem has always been consistency, he lets in complete garbage goals from time to time. The problem is smaller nowadays but I certainly don't think he's elite. Also career year on a contract year.

I think we could get someone like Fleury or Raanta and possibly also gain an asset. Both those goalies might be somewhat considered cap dumps. Raanta has a career .921 but can't stay healthy

All goalies do. It usually comes down to how much you watch them.
Markstrom has gotten steadily better and more consistent over the past few years, and was elite this year. And I didn't see him giving up many weak goals - certainly a lot less often than Talbot.

Not a chance IMO. The asks we are hearing on rumours are not cap dumps, they are actually sounding quite expensive.

Canucks might not even get to play in the qualifying round this year if it wasn’t for Markstrom. He carried them through the Blues series as well.
Flames dump Rittich to a team set with a tandem scenario and then give Markstrom 5.5x5-6 years and sign a cheap backup.

I can't see tree spending a 1st with so many UFA goalies available. Free assets are better than ones you pay a premium for.

I agree with this. So many options on the market trade or free agency. It is pretty clear Treliving has a plan A To get better in net but they can always slide back to Talbot.
I do think if the Flames send a 1st in a trade involving Kuemper the deal is going to include other pieces like a signed Hall, and or OEL

This is the only scenario that I can get behind. I want to see Zagidulin in a backup role this year. I want to see him fight for that backup spot with Parsons the following year, and I want to see what Schneider and McDonald can accomplish with 40 games each in the AHL. I want Wolf to force us to trade Markstrom in the final year of his contract. I want us to do some crazy trades where we draft Askarov and the competition for 1A and 1B between Wolf and Askarov is so crazy and dramatic that the documentary they make of it goes on to win the Oscar at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Is that so much to ask?

McDonald is no longer Flames property. They let him go when he was up for a new contract.

Nothing confirmed but after the fact I heard rumors Bishop and Drouin were going to be coming to Calgary for the 6th pick + Backlund. That I can say was hearsay so not confirmed but the fact the Flames were talking extension with Bishop made me think it was very close.

Yeah, I mean, they wanted to trade for a guy who had Calgary on his no-trade list and that guy wanted to be paid a crazy premium to play in a market he didn't want to be in and the flames were willing to trade Tkachuk to do it...
I'm getting light headed, I need to sit down.

The Flames were not willing to trade Tkachuk. That’s the point.

This makes me want to vomit.
I would much rather give a 1st round pick for Kuemper, and I don't want to do that at all.
If you're going to throw away the future by having a very old, overpaid goalie for many years, you might as well throw away draft picks as well.
Markstrom has only had one pretty good season in his career.
With three years of a flat cap, a contract like this could be, and very likely would be, beyond disastrous. He would be 34 years old in the middle of the contract.

I also have serious doubts about Schneider coming back.
After our NHL goalies it will likely be:
AHL:
Zagidulin
Parsons
ECHL:
Guys on AHL deals
CHL:
Wolf

I find it hard to believe that we would be paying a 1st for Kuemper when we have the clear advantage over the Coyotes. They are looking to shed salary, sadly because of COVID and ownership not being able to afford to pay their players on time. We have the ball in our court.
Would rather trade for 2 years of Kuemper than signing a long term deal to a goalie. Long term UFA deals haven't gone our way since Hudler.

/Ace ventura inhale....
If youre gonna sign a goalie to an overpay you better hold on to your picks because you'll be picking high a lot of years in a row if the goalies play craters over the term. I'd rather overpay for a goalie and keep my picks as insurance. I think its called hedging bets.
Conversely if you overpay in trade with picks to acquire a goalie and he craters....well you lost twice.
Exhale.
