idea, CalgaryPuck book club
This board seems to be full of really bright readers. So I was thinking maybe we could do a virtual book club idea.
For a week we bring forward suggestions for a book to read. Maybe we set rules about fiction or non fiction. At the end of the week we vote on the book and then take a week or two to read it. Then come back and talk about and debate the book and rate it. That way there's a place where people can come if they want ideas on their next big read.
Let me know if you guys would be interested, and what the process should be.

That's fair, what if at the start of a month for the first week we put in suggestions, or books that we want to see, then we vote on them, and then reconvene at the start of the next month?

I actually do have some graphic novels in mind.
I think it could be a cool discussion.

I'd be all over a graphic novel book club. That's a little easier to maintain. I've learned that if I don't like a regular book, I just drop it, rather than push through because it takes me that much longer to finish.

I swear to God I thought this title said "boob club." I was like, "Finally! Something for boob-people in this weirdo ass-world we currently find ourselves stranded in."
But, nope. Just a club to talk about books. The books will probably all be about asses, too. Figures.

The first one could be Bob Woodward's "Rage", then it would be about a boob and an ass. Keep everyone happy.

I'm totally down for this. We can definitely approach it thematically as well (other than fiction/non-fiction) to have variety in what we read.
I was/am actually helping moderate the 52in52 community on reddit (52 books in 52 weeks) but covid definitely threw things out of whack. We can definitely use some of the suggestions on there as well from the last few years.

I'll put out something this weekend, after I get through this game. Football just takes a ton of time.
But lets think about recommendations, the preference is a book that most of us haven't read so its a new read for the majority.
Do we want to do the first one as a non-fiction, fiction, or even graphic novel. I'd prefer to keep to books that can be read electronically instead of running to a book store to buy it.
I'd want to set a couple of rules if its all right.
I'd like to not have books based around modern politics. The books on active leaders and governments, we have enough threads about that.
Any other historic would be cool.
I was originally going to limit fictional books based on mega empires. IE Star Wars, Twilight, Harry Potter etc, because its multiple books and not everyone likes every universe, so I would be ok with it as long as its either a standalone book in a universe or if its multiple books we all agree on a limit of x books.
At some point when and if this ever passes, maybe we can incoporate this with a drinks and discussion night if everyone wants it.

Well I’m happy to know this as I don’t have much junk in my trunk.
In any case, this sounds like a cool idea.
Now that I’ve seen I’m Thinking of Ending Things I want to read the book, and that has rekindled my interest in reading.
Currently re-reading Camus’ The Stranger because it’s short and I’ve got the paperback. Just feels good to read again.
Will be great to see what is suggested.

Sorry guys, I got really tied up with work and football.
So I wanted to start doing some work and research on this.
I'd love to start up a first book club in October.
So I wanted to get your feedback for the first one.
Questions
1) Would you like the first book to be fiction or non fiction
2) I'd like it to be a book that nobody has read before if possible.
3) If non fiction - What topic interests you provide more then one if you like. Once that happens I'll research books in that area and make two recommendations that we would vote on.
4) If Fiction - Please pick a genere, Sci-Fi, Action, narrative based, comedy etc. I want to stay away from well known franchise style books. Once we get that I'll do some digging and make a couple of recommendations.
5) How long do we need to read the book? Do we set a date and do a zoom discussion with drinks?
Anyways just some thoughts

I find the annual NPR Book Concierge a great source for finding new books to read (can sort by genre). Most 2019 books should be in paperback by now:
