I think the holdup is money.

Interim head coach and head coach are different things and if I were ward I would be waiting to see what other coaches get this off-season in terms of dollars.

I don't think the Flames are looking at other candidates really, everyone is playing the waiting game to see how coaching salaries are impacted going forward.

You think Ward is holding out for bigger dollars? That would be terrible! If the Flames are looking to cheap out to keep Ward at a low number we officially have no hope.

I don't think it's as dramatic as that, it's a wage conversation between employer and employee.

Interim number is different than full time imo and with a bunch of new contracts to be signed it's best for him. To wait knowing worst case scenario he's back as associate.

It's a really unique negotiation which I think is why there's been no announcement.

Not often do coaches already under contract negotiate for a promotion.

Speaking of wages, the Flames have reduced salary of all staff by 20% effective Sept 1.

Good thing we have an expansion team coming in as teams start to fold.

If you could do that with players that would help free some cap money!

If that's the case, it's likely an underwhelming announcement.

Friedman saying he's heard that the Flames are trending towards Ward.

Friedman just reported that because of no news coming out of Calgary he believes it's trending towards Ward returning as Flames head coach.

I get he has to say something, but I don't think it means that at all. In the pandemic era the interviews would be done via phone or video call and the Flames have always been pretty tight lipped about things and rarely have leaks.

Given that any interviews would likely happen through video conference, it's possible this stuff just doesn't leak to press right now.

That’s an interesting point. People used to be seen flying to the cities where they were interviewing, and the gossip fed journalists

Given the current situation I would imagine Laviolette, Gallant, Babcock etc did not interview for the Caps coaching job in person and those were still discovered.

The simplest answer is likely the right one. Treliving didn't speak to anyone else.

I doubt it. This has taken way too long to remove the interim tag and adjust his salary. I wonder if they are bringing in all new assistants for Ward.

So if this whole time was spent finding assistants for Ward would that not suggest he was chosen early in the process?

Flames have shown that they like to keep their hand picked assistants so I'm not sure much would change although it's possible Ward has a coach or two that he's always wanted to follow him into his first head coach gig. I would almost be okay with Ward coming back if he changed the goaltending coach as it's the one stone the organization has left unturned over the last few coach hirings/firings.
