You know that people want a head coach they'll have confidence in. Someone who has a track record of winning (as a head coach) in the league. Its not that much of an ask.
Who cares if the people have confidence in the coach?

The right roster of players need to have confidence in the coach.

That’s what matters. Look at the probable coaches in the finals.

Ray Edwards from Player Development to coaching was a temporary move, was it not? At least that was the impression I had gotten.

But with so much current uncertainty perhaps there's a hiring freeze.

What if Ward is actually a really good coach but the roster is awful?

I don't think the Flames will be filling any vacant positions for management support positions like that player development or scouting.

It's gonna be a task of doing more with less.

What's your point? hire Marc Crawford?

New coaches win cups all the time...you think the same handful of guys are going to win all the cups for the rest of history?

I have confidence Ward (or anyone else qualified) can succeed with this team assuming they make some needed improvements (goal, top 6)

Gallant had a worse winning percentage coaching Vegas than Ward did coaching the Flames...which roster is better?

Gallant had Vegas playing .551 hockey

I just love disappointment and mediocrity. Excellent decision.

If money is the issue, I’d rather spend a couple mil under the cap and use that towards a top coach.

8th best record in the NHL under Ward. As close to being top 5 as they were being middle of the pack.

How is that not an objective metric?

Edwards was temporary, yes.

And you could be right, the Flames may not make any further moves in regards to coaching to maintain cost certainty.

Still, no less disappointing.

Ward got handed a dog's breakfast last season, and got the guys enjoying playing hockey again. No easy task with the peters upheaval, covid break, living and playing in a bubble away from your family, isolated with your co-workers. All without really being able to put his own stamp on the systems, with limited practice time. And still managed .600 hockey. So maybe it's not the news you were hoping for, but it's hardly fair to open and close the book on next season with last season being your only reference point. Just my two cents.

in a gate driven league it's the season ticket holders.

For some odd reason I'm not all that enamoured by regular season records.

Ward did an admirable job of stepping in to an unstable situation. I'll give him that.

But you have a hockey team..they've been rebuilding for several years, and need to take the next step to becoming a contender and going deeper in the playoffs. Under this stabilizing "interim" move, they crash out of the playoffs again in spectacular fashion. Now you've got a chance to hire a new coach, who are you selecting? I doubt any of you are jumping at the assistant of the last guy. This is not a first choice type of hire.

This is a "it went okay enough, kind of, until the end, let's see what happens again" type move. Flames need some impact moves in all areas.

It's pretty amazing that before this news, the poll thread said that 85% of this forum wanted Ward gone, yet this thread seems to be much more in support of keeping him.

What changed?

My guess is time. People have had more time to reflect. Same reason why Tre didn’t make a decision right away.
Don’t let the heat of the moment cloud your judgement.

Cause Treliving can do no wrong here at CP. So if Ward is being kept that means I smell a major core shakeup coming.

My guess is trying to assign the attributes of a voting thread to a non-voting thread populated by non-voting participants yields different anecdotal results.

Is anyone who voted they shouldn't in here saying they are happy they did?

Either way someone needs to do their job; We could blame the players until we are blue in the face, but what good will it do? Until BT does something about it they may fall short again no matter whether Ward or someone else is coaching!

Bring in a coach with experience who can deal with these wayward players seems like a rational approach.

Would people be happy with Rick Bowness or Craig Berube as the Flames HC ?

The Blues and Stars are happy with them!

The former had not been a head coach in the NHL in nearly 2 decades . Berube had never been a HC.

Right player mix and right coach at the right time.
