James Neal’s problems were (a) his slowness (not Virtanen) and (b) very specific off ice issues which I’ve never heard mentioned about Virtanen. Also his high salary and lengthy contract.

Vancouver's forwards were so great they were a bubble team with a goalie absolutely standing on his head all year lol

god those guys are getting cocky...they would have missed the playoffs if not for covid IMO

If they can't get Anderson from CBJ I would not be at all shocked to see them look at Virtanen

Id rather get a free tp acquire Virtanen rather than pay a premium for a Josh Anderson. All thing being equal right now.

Kept assets and Virtanen>>>>>>>lost assets and Anderson.

Pretty fair evaluation of Virtanen:

Blaster we're just speaking from experience after having the first team with five 70 point players since the Pens in the early 00s.

Sustaining that high production is easier said than done.

And many times this past season I said to myself "boy the goals are coming extraordinarily easily for the canucks this year" mirroring the Flames previous season in a lot of ways. We could score at will, just like the canucks this past year, even with limited opportunities. And that's what got your team out of trouble in the regular season and more so in the playoffs.

I'm here to tell you dont expect that to last. Your team will need to learn to control and carry the play more than they have to sustain their success.

They're not going to keep making good on all their handful of chances when their chances are limited.

Its a heads up, not hating on your players. Don't expect secondary guys like Tofolli, Miller, Pearson to "easily" put up 50+. You'll be less disappointed when one or two of those guys suddenly has a harder time posting those numbers than you expected at the outset.

It's the nature of the beast/game. Nice season from the group though.

And they won't fly under the radar or be taken lightly next year.

Thats the other factor and what often plays into a regression from the group in terms of production. Other teams are caught sleeping far less often.

I expect Pettersen to continue at a similar clip because of his elite skillset, but the secondary guys aren't going to walk over the opposition as easily.

Pearson snuffing 50 points means another career year for him.... I guess that is possible. PPG Miller is another career year for him. Anything over 50 points for Toffoli would be his best season in half a decade. I guess all of that is not only possible but probable after such an impressive two round playoff run.

I doubt the Flames have interest in him, considering character is one of their highest priorities.
I get that, but the Flames also signed Neal and then got rid of him because of reported character issues.

Depending on contracts, I'd rather just go after Haula as a UFA.

More like average or maybe slightly above. Nobody is scared of guys like Pearson or Toffoli. Or Boeser for that matter and projecting Miller to repeat his career year is pretty optimistic.

Vancouver clearly does one thing better than us and that is surrounding its core talent with the right mix of pluggers grinders and hungry veterans.

We are frickin hopeless at this.

Jeebus. They had one year of sort-of success.

Yeah, they just had their Hartley season. Young core popped off early.

Let’s see if they make the same mistakes Treliving made here. I think they already sort of have - they’ve already got some brutal UFA contracts, they already don’t have a 1st round pick this year.

Will they be patient from here on? Or will they hit the fast forward button and screw it all up in the same way we did?

...and holy crap why are we even discussing Virtanen? The guy sucks. He knocked off a career high in goals because his shooting % jumped up to an unsustainable level. He’s garbage, and he’s also a total ###### off the ice - just go browse Canucks reddit and you’ll see the grease oozing off him.

Vancouver's case is strange because of all the wins they rope-a-doped on the back of brick wall performances in net, rather than took forcibly from their opponents.

Yes, wins come in all shapes and forms. But that form was rather consistently on the not so impressive side.

It's not the first time we've seen that from a team, we even saw it from our guys five years ago. What proves to be consistently true though is that particular way of winning is not sustainable beyond those single season runs like the one VAN just had.

You're not going to make a compete window out of getting outshot 50-20 while outscoring the other team on the board.

Not sure where to post this, so put it here. Wondering what people think about Flames overall Cap situation. When you look at our top 6 forwards, seems to be some good contract value there. Perhaps Backlund is a bit overpaid?? Maybe Ryan is now a bit of an overpay, especially if he is 4th line.
Other than the obvious contract of Lucic our forward group cap hits don’t look that bad.

Defence looks decent as well, maybe now Gio is a bit high, but it wasn’t that long ago some were calling that a value contract.

Not overpaying on goalies.

How are we in cap jail compared to say Toronto?

Toronto has a little less retained salary/buyout. And a very cheap bottom 4 D (and it shows). But overall, they are in as deep trouble as Calgary cap-wise.

Im pumped for change on Flames D and being not "stacked on paper". Last 10 years flames have a top D squad but always underperformed. Time to open space and let the younger guys take over.
