That OEL contract was gross before a flat cap, now its untenable. I can’t see Arizona getting out from under it without a massively one sided deal.

Seems like we take on too many of these type of contracts that further handicap the team. What if he doesn't rebound, what then..., another buyout!?

I would hope Kuemper would be part of it.
I really would like to see OEL-Andersson as a pairing with Kuemper between the pipes. OEL fills a need if the team believes Hanifin won’t work on a top pair.
LHD depth of OEL, Giordano, Valimaki is a strength. Kuemper and Rittich are a strong tandem.
I’d be okay with that, but I have a lot more interest in OEL than most and view him as a significant upgrade on OEL and then it properly slots Giordano on the 2nd pair.

An Ekman-Larsson trade is only a good idea if Calgary also receives an asset as an incentive to take on the player.
Any proposal involving the 1st or Hanifin makes absolutely zero sense. Those are assets that are outrageously valuable compared to OEL.

I’ll take OEL if Hayton is that piece otherwise hard pass. We need to be considering trading our 28/29 YO contracts if not this year then next not bringing in the most expensive player in franchise history by a lot. Bouwmeester would end up being a better player here over the same amount of time IMO and patience with OEL would run thin especially if we are had on the asking price.

A trade where just lucic and OEL change teams saves the coyotes 3 million dollars in actual cash for this coming season.

I just find it hard to believe the Flames are a club that are willing in excess of the cap in real $’s in these times. We’re not the Yankees.

If the reports are true and Arizona wants a player budget just less then $70 million then they aren’t going to want much money coming back. My guess is they won’t players as much as young prospectson elc and picks.
I don’t mind OEL but I think he is overpaid . If flames are going down that route then Arizona better eat at least a million.

Flames are definitely shopping for leadership... Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Captain) maybe Derek Stepan is of interest too? (Alternate Captain)

Gio for OEL.
We get younger on the blue line, Yotes save cash. Nice retirement location for Mark.

And the Flames get saddled with an anchor contract for the next 7 years, with Flames fans left wondering, "how did a team without a GM fleece us so badly?"

Even of OEL had 1.5 million per season retained, I would be hesitant to take him for free. In fact, I wouldn't even trade Lucic for OEL straight up. There's just so much term with OEL.
He's not that good, and he'd be playing into his late thirties.
Cap space is going to be extremely valuable. The Flames simply can't afford to take on bad contracts. They can't make any bad UFA signings. In order to do this, most players are going to have to come from within the organization. Re-sign RFAs to good deals. Tkachuk may need 9+ million while the cap is still flat. Mangiapane is due for a raise.
I think the best way to avoid contracts in general is to avoid giving money and term to older players, especially in free agency. No matter how tempting it may be. If they sign a free agent, the free agent should be young and elite. No more Brouwer and Neal types. Stay away from Wayne Simmonds and maybe even Markstrom. Luckily, most of this year's free agents are actually pretty young (29 or younger).
Toffoli and Granlund are 27. Haula, Hall, Krug, and Vatanen are 28. Hamonic, Muzzin and Brodie are 29.
That's pretty much the list. Markstrom and Holtby are 30. I wouldn't give them more than 4 years. Kuemper might be available via trade, be he expires after a year.
Please ignore Hoffman, Dadonov, Kovalchuk, Simmonds, Shattenkirk, and Holtby.
Unless they come extremely cheap, they're simply too risky during the flat cap era.

My first thought was: no way does ARI take on an extra $2M in salary. However, in real dollars, they don't. So for them, they get a younger defenseman by taking on Lucic's salary. And in 3 years they are in great shape (they clearly win the trade beyond 3 years)
For the Flames, they save $2M in cap, which they can really use. So for 3 years, it's a really good trade. The problem is the last few years of the contract. But I could see the Flames being willing to make that trade-off.

Didn't realize there was that much term. Thought it was a little more than Gio.

Actually, Oliver Ekman-Larsson just turned 29 on July 17th and he'll be 35 years old when his contract is completed. (7 years)

Does that really help the Flames even in those 3 years? The $2 million in cap savings will be spent on a Lucic replacement. Maybe you save $500K there.
Guess you have to believe OEL is an upgrade over Hanifin which maybe he is. But man, you screw yourself three years out when Lucic would have been off your books.
I can kind of see this happening actually. Mortgage the future for a slight upgrade now.

OEL will be younger when his contract expires than Gio is now.
