I have yet to hear one single compelling reason to acquire OEL. I have heard lots of attempts at deflecting all the negatives, but no one is listing any positives here.
Just because he is available, doesn't mean the Flames should pursue him.

If you're thinking about how easy/hard it would be to trade a guy in 4 years after you've paid the bulk of his contract it's probably best just not to acquire him in the first place.

got better ideas? OEL is no Lidstrom, but he if that's what you are after then good luck.
BTW, OEL just turned 29, but is over the hill.
Meanwhile Johnny at 27 is a young star on the raise.
You guys need a better calendar.

You must be new to the sport, because if you weren't you'd know certain teams are always willing to take on players whose cap hit is higher than their salary so they can meet the floor without actually spending.

I like the idea of sending Lucic and Ryan to balance it out, or at least sending Lucic and trading Ryan away elsewhere (he's a good player, I think teams would take him given the 1 year remaining).
I don't see them eating any salary on the deal given how long it is, and I really do think OEL is a good defenceman, he's just overpaid. So, like Flash said, if you can swap overpaid guys at the bottom of the lineup like Lucic for a guy at the top of the lineup like OEL (OBVIOUSLY the trade would be bigger than that) then I'm for it. A good third line winger and a 4th line centre can be had for peanuts. A top pairing defenceman that logs a ton of minutes can't, so while he's overpaid, he's also worth a ton more to the Flames on the ice.
Plus he's handsome and that's important to me.
|
Including Lucic is the only way it makes any sense. Even then it is treacherous.

I believe the different modelling projections have him north of $5M. I believe it's been mentioned that the Flames and Gus are not close on value either, and if he was going to sign for sub-4m, I can't imagine that would be the case.

I never suggested acquiring him. In fact I've stated I don't see how it can work. This spun off from me correcting Ashax for passing along false information.

And you have to pay those teams to do it.
So you want to pay now to acquire him, then pay again to get rid of him - sounds like a winning strategy.

We'll see, but I don't think he has a snowball's chance in hell of getting $5M in this market.
I would guess more like $3m on a short deal.

What?????
The Leafs just paid a 1st rounder to get rid of Marleau's contract, and that was only 1 year at $6.25 million. Imagine what we would have to give up to get out of OEL's contract?
Beyond that, why would we want to put ourselves in this position to begin with?

In my opinion this team is missing players with a high compete level and snarl.
Watching the semi-finals right now and the teams left are big and mean.
Smaller players on these teams all have a very high compete level.
How would OEL and Gustaffson help in that department.
Not to mention there contract cost.
Big regrets if we get either.
Trade for Matt Dumba that may help.
Free agent DEF:
Joel Edmundson
Zack Bogosian
Brendan Dillon

For sure, but the point still stands. This a terrible contract to acquire- doesn't really matter if its 35 mil or 39 mil he's owed in the next 4 years.

Did Johnny hit a wall too then? Come on, players have down years.
OEL is a top pair Dman. I'd rather Tre got him that another slug like Hamonic.
And since we are about to be short on D, what do you suggest? Id suggest Hedman, but wouldnt you know it, another over the hill player.

New strategy: build the best looking team.
1) it should be easy, as no other teams (to my knowledge) are competing in that space, and
2) at least half the fanbase will be happy, which is more than they are achieving now

The Flames are short on RIGHT defensemen, but have a full compliment of LEFT defensemen. It makes little sense to acquire seat another left defenseman when there is only one on the right side who is under contract.

It has nothing to do with age- it has to do with his play over the past 2 seasons and contract status. We already have a better, cheaper version of exactly what OEL is in Hanifin. Why on earth would we want to shoot ourselves in the foot and acquire another boat anchor contract?
Solutions that might actually help the team:
Sign Hall 7 years x 8 million
Give up assets for Kuemper
Find a deal for Monahan or Johnny that brings in young, NHL ready assets.
Pay for a quality head coach.
I would rather see any of the above than to acquire OEL. I wouldn't want to take on OEL for free. He is not even in the same stratosphere as Stone or ROR.

Johnny may have hit a wall, but he is 2 years younger and doesn't have an $8.25 million AAV contract for the next SEVEN seasons.
Nor are we looking to acquire Johnny Gaudreau? What does this comparison have to do with anything?
And who said Hedman is over the hill? His play wouldn't dictate it, unlike OEL.
What are you even arguing? You are making up arguments in your head and getting angry about things nobody has said. Why are we even having this discussion?
