Really? I recall the talk of Bieksa being the peacemaker was talked about as soon as it happened.
But Bieksa's actions always seemed so dumb to me as he didn't actually help the rookie out.
He didn't want Westgarth to fight the rookie, Kellan Lain, so he stepped up to take the faceoff. But he refused to fight Westgarth, and instead chases down Smid... leaving Westgarth to fight Lain anyways.
Here's McGrattan talking about it:
Thanks for this. I always thought Torts was a fricken hypocrite for getting angry at Bob to begin with. However, my big argument with how everything transpired was that the line brawl would have never happened if Torts decided to throw the top line out against the 4th line. I didn't think for one second that the Calgary players would have 'jumped' the Canucks - like how does that ever happen any longer? I can't remember 4th liners just jumping 1st liners, perhaps with the extremely rare egregious hit committed by a 1st liner.
Bob got fined for that, but I still say he didn't do a thing wrong that game in starting the 4th line, but Torts somehow made things bad for his team - like he did all season long in Vancouver.
If memory serves, the 4th line had a good game the night before so it's reasonable to say Bob may have been rewarding them by giving them starting lineup duty.

That’s what McGratten says in that clip above too. Then says it was his idea to line brawl if they also started their 4th.
I thought I recall a story that Tortorella had a personal thing going on that week, and he was on a wires edge. Doesn’t excuse it, but adds some context to a bizarre situation. Either way, he isn’t looking for excuses:
Quote:
“It was absolute stupidity,” Tortorella said Wednesday, referring to his actions towards Hartley and the Flames during a game two seasons ago. “I don’t want to talk much about it because I’m embarrassed by it. … My heart was in the right place in what I thought I was doing at that time. Obviously, I wasn’t thinking clearly. But I cared about my team at that point in time.”
“My heart was in the right place, but my mind … it’s inexcusable, and I’m totally embarrassed by it.”

Yeah, Canucks fans were so pleased with Bieksa winning a fight (which wasn’t even clear cut) against Smid. He literally ran away from Westgarth (who wasn’t really that good of a fighter anyway).

Thanks for posting this.
Total segue off the original topic, but if I recall correctly, the prior few games in a row, the Canucks were losing late and started gooning it up, jumping players, etc.
I.e. Two games prior against the Ducks they were down 6-0 and received the instigating penalties and more misconducts.
Game prior to that against the Kings it was a close game, and Vancouver got the first instigators...
As for the league's all-time worst spot-picker Bieksa, he can eat a bag of dicks.

Johnny Gaudreau has as many points as Tyler Seguin does this playoffs, in 8 less games. And JG has a better plus minus.
Reminder, Seguin is paid $9.75M for another 7 years!

I wonder how JG would do in the playoffs with Radulov and Benn
