Surprised these things leak out like that.
Dont be to surprised to see the flames under budget. A lot of these owners have seen their buisness take massive losses. The bottom line is far more important than toys.

I don't really think that happens with players, frankly.

Sure tendencies get exposed and coaches analyze tape, but gaudreaus skills aren't a particular deke on a break away or a one timer from a particular spot, it's elite hockey sense/pick awareness and the hands soft enough to make plays on 90% of what his mind sees developing.

I don't think that's game-plannable.

I think it's plainly obvious that the production isn't there because the effort isn't there because the joy isn't there. I get that everyone views the game differently, but that's what I see.

Barring injury I think it's excellent odds that gaudrwaus first season away from Calgary, whenever that is, is point per game plus.

So they plan on adding those players without adding more than $9 million of real money but at the same time they can't add any cap money.

That will be a fun job.

Hard to believe they were trying so hard to extend Hall, and he certainly can't find them very attractive if winning is paramount.

If I say winning is the most important thing then any place I sign has a built-in press release about how great the market/franchise is.

If I tell you the quantity of attractive men is the most important thing to me and then I sign in Edmonton, is that an indication Edmonton has the highest quantity of attractive men or does it suggest my public statements may not have been truthful?

But when you're trading a star player, especially a star as bright as gaudreau, and you're getting pieces back to win now, if you don't win NOW it then becomes very easy to criticize the trade, even if in many ways it's just as "too soon to tell" as a futures trade.

This off-season is looking like it could be the worst trade atmosphere of the last 7 years to do a deal, further increasing the potential criticism of the return.

The flames could always keep gaudreau in the end, but will open themselves up to massive criticism should the team experience no extra competitiveness, with an even worse trade climate on the other end of this season with a limited NTC in effect and just a year left on his deal.

I think the very real scenario of trading Johnny for draft picks and using the free cap space to sign Hall exists. In this scenario getting say the 7th overall pick it may tale a few years to see if the deal pans out.

Flames maintain their win now and shake the team up by swapping star left wingers. They also add the top prospect in the organization.

It's never been effectively explained to me why a team that finds themselves in a position to draft top 10 is interested in giving that up for perhaps as little as 2 years of Gaudreau

So you think it’s more likely that he isn’t producing because of his mood over the possibility that teams have figured out how to defend him?
I find his play to be highly predictable and therefore easy to game plan

Yikes. Failing to pay bonuses can't be good. What are the ramifications?

I can imagine if Hall re-signed at a high price after other players failed to get paid, it would not be good for morale. Especially if the contract included a signing bonus, which it almost certainly would have. It wouldn't have been his fault, but I could see other players on the team resenting it.

They are going to get low-balled by any team trading with them if the trade includes taking back salary.

Teams that have been in a deep rebuild and looking to push themselves out will make moves for win now players in an effort to do so. Arizona traded the 7th overall pick and Tony Deangelo for Derek Stepan and backup Anti Raanta. The Richards and Carter trades are also good examples. LA was a team wanting to take a big step forward and Columbus was trying to appease their franchise player.

Sounds like New Jersey and Buffalo today doesn’t it? Both teams have been rebuilding for several years and have accumulated high picks. NJ had 2 former 1st overall centers that could use an elite wing man. Buffalo has a disgruntled franchise player they need to appease before he demand a trade.

I still don’t buy it. Teams haven’t acted like that in a long time. Even then Carter and Richards were locked up to loooooong term deals, Rantaa was an RFA and Stepan had 4 years on his deal.

I can maybe see the Buffalo scenario happening, but even then I think that would be a mistake on their part.

NJ didn’t just trade Hall for a bunch of futures only to use them on another soon to be UFA winger.

Where are you getting $61M for the Coyotes? Capfriendly has them at 44M for next yet...

Oh edit, nope nevermind. They already looking at next season. Yeah, that's going to be rough on the Yotes.
