What about Simmonds at/around league minimum if he would go for it? Maybe a one year show me contract to see if he can still contribute in a meaningful way. I always wanted him in Calgary. Although I know he's not the Simmonds of old. At the very least I would try a PTO with him if he doesn't end up signing somewhere else and he's willing.

I like Simmonds, but I don't see a spot for him to play outside the 4th line and I would prefer someone more defensively reliable that can PK in that role.
I see the same problem (no spot for him to play) with a Josh Anderson acquisition, I don't see him knocking someone out of the top 9, and he'll make too much money for the 4th line, even though he would be a good fit defensively and on the PK.

This to me is what stands out. That's what the Flames really need. Which is why I have been campaigning for Lehner for awhile and am still hoping we have a chance to sign him.

Well if he is able to assist in anymore Granlund for Fiala grand larceny type trades it will be a win for Florida. Dump a huge contract like Granlunds for a much better, much younger, much cheaper hockey player was pretty impressive.

The difference between a .981 and .978 is extremely minimal, especially when just looking at low danger shots, a difference of 3/1000 is probably a 2-3 goal difference at absolute most over an entire season. So the only real advantage to Lehner over Kuemper IMO is acquisition cost.

I don’t want to get too specific, that would be getting into unfounded rumours territory (even though I know they aren’t rumours, but there’s no way to verify them for the site and I don’t want to get CP in trouble for some of the claims I could post). It was also years ago now so hopefully he’s changed.
He just wasn’t my type of guy. Left a sour taste in my mouth. I’ll leave it at that.

I've heard this, but I also know somebody who knew him who said he was a nice guy. He has a propensity to show up to camp out of shape though-he did it at the beginning of the year, and at the bubble.

Sure, if you ignore the medium danger shot difference... which is what they were mostly pointing to.

The value with Kuemper is the short term low aav structure of his contract.
The flames are in cap jail somewhat and need a goalie who can float with Talbot for under 8 mill combined.
I don't see Murray signing below 5 which means your tandem is probably with rittich which I don't thin nk is the organizational preference, and you've got just one year to make a decision on rittich before you're nowchasing a backup while having to re-sign kuemper.
I just don't see the value in Murray to Calgary unless Pittsburgh is charging lower prices than Arizona.

I think implicitly the flames know a refreshed new situation for Gaudreau means he's an 80-100 point player at his new destination.
In order not to lose face they need to be able to justify that with the return you'd expect for that calibre of player, but I'd be surprised if those offers have materialized yet.
Really tough spot to trade a star player while trying to still win.

From the same thread:

Friedman: “Believe the Calgary #Flames are looking at defense options. They’ve looked at Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Treliving used to work in ARZ, knows him really well. They’ve investigated Rasmus Ristolainen before. I don’t know if it’s ever been close, but they’ve considered it.”

Valid point, but not one I agree with.
Johnny hasn't shown that he can re-adjust now that the league has adjusted to him.
He could pop, but I could also see his decline continuing.
But I do agree this is probably something they are worried about.

Sources say the Sabres are considering an internal salary cap in the low $70 million range; the Arizona Coyotes, who recently failed to make on-time signing bonus payments to a number of players, may be operating just south of $70 million under their next GM; the Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly planning to budget in the low-to-mid $70 million range on an $81.5 million limit.

Looks like this off season is shaping up to be a giant game of chicken between tes with internal caps trying to offload players and cap for quality picks against everyone else.
FA is going to be crazy with low cap 1 year deals at the top and bottom end of it I think.

When you're trading a star player for futures, a lot of the criticism you might receive is muted due to the uncertain nature of the exchange.
'too soon to judge's
But when you're trading a star player, especially a star as bright as gaudreau, and you're getting pieces back to win now, if you don't win NOW it then becomes very easy to criticize the trade, even if in many ways it's just as "too soon to tell" as a futures trade.
This off-season is looking like it could be the worst trade atmosphere of the last 7 years to do a deal, further increasing the potential criticism of the return.
The flames could always keep gaudreau in the end, but will open themselves up to massive criticism should the team experience no extra competitiveness, with an even worse trade climate on the other end of this season with a limited NTC in effect and just a year left on his deal.

I could not be a fan of any team with an internal salary cap.
Surprised these things leak out like that.
