Didn't Kuemper have some sort of serious illness 3-4 years ago? Or am I mixing up my goalies?

Are you thinking of Josh Harding, who has MS and played with Kuemper on Minnesota?

What do management see as weaknesses/ liabilities , that can’t be reformed, of Gaudreau and Monahan?
That might help decide who should be moved.

Gaudreau can't be reformed from thinking that he is underpaid on his current deal and it will cost more to keep him in Calgary than it will for him to play out east.

For me it’s Gaudreau. His lack of ability to step up when games get meaningful and in the playoffs. Just don’t think his style suits playoff type hockey.

Really?
He looks great now, but in the summer of 2017 Kuemper didn't look like much more than a middling backup goalie. He was fine in Minnesota, but most definitely nothing special. He was up and down a lot, and didn't really settle in until his second year in Phoenix last season.

It isn’t just one flub up. It’s the repeated consecutive misses.
Hiller
McDonald
Elliott
Johnson
Parsons
Smith
Can add ortio/ramo to this list, although those were inherited.
Talbot was adequate, but not stellar. But look at the carnage before him.
6 years of trying to find and we are still at square one. GMs only get so many coaches, how many goalies do they get to try out?
Treliving has done good work here, that’s not in dispute. But addressing the goaltending long term is not his strength.

Hiller was a widely praised acquisition at the time. Plus that was really a Burke call - he was a Hiller supporter from the Anaheim days.
McDonald was also a Burke choice.
Johnson was a backup. Meh.
Nothing wrong with the Parsons pick.
Smith was a bad choice.

That all said, he certainly hasn’t struck gold with a goalie. But man, look at where the top goalies now were early on and tell me their success was predictable.

Maybe not "struck gold," but I maintain that Rittich was a very astute pickup.

He was also in on Murray before anyone knew who he was, was in on Bishop (thankfully that missed), and was in on Fleury before he went to Vegas and dominated. Yeah, need results. But I have confidence in this area for Tre yet.

Goalies are just a weird thing to judge a GM at, because no one seems to predict when a goalie will actually play well.
Markstrom was waived early in his Vancouver career.
Dubnyk was dumped by both Edmonton and Montreal.
Kuemper iirc had been give a chance due to injury somewhere and was a disappointment.
Kiprusoff had been given somewhat a chance in San Jose and was not very good at all.
When Halak got traded, a lot of Habs fans thought they should have traded Price. Halak settled into a 1b/2 kind of guy
Binnington was awesome a year ago and not so awesome this year
Bernier was once the next great starter
I don't know if goalies are voodoo, but they definitely seem hard to predict.

Vasilevski?
Lehner?
Markstrom?
Price?
Rask?
Gibson?
Carter Hart?
All pretty predictable imo. All were top prospects, all were developed over time, and all are now top goalies. Lehner and markstrom have both been available in the recent past. The rest have stayed with their teams since drafted.
Perhaps we should be gunning for askarov

Yeesh. Most of those are very minor pieces. Tre really doesn't trade for forwards very much.
In contrast look at all these dmen he's gotten via trades:
Forbort
Gustafsson
Fantenberg
Andrew Nielsen
Rinat Valiev
Matt Taormina
Hanifin
Prout
Ryan Murphy
Hamonic
Mike Kostka
Stone
Jokipakka
Hamilton
It seems every year Tre adds an NHL defenceman and a couple farmhands to the roster. Forwards... ehhhhh. There's not nearly as much there.
|
May as well do the goalies too..
Kevin Poulin
Niklas Backstrom
Brian Elliott
Mike Smith
Eddie Lack
The GM should've been fired by now but he's towing the company line so he'll stick around but the whole pro scouting should be shown the door. Outside of Lindholm and Hamilton/Hanifin that is a massive pile of stink.
I get most of these are minor trades but the pro scouts are literally just collecting a paycheck.
When was the last time Flames won a trade? or stole a player? Kipper?

The Flames won the Lucic/Neal trade by a mile; they got a third round pick out of it.
