Disagree but you're proving my point for me. Sell high get good stuff. No way should the Flames back up the brinks truck for him until he's proven he can do what you think he can do.

Mangiapane had 17 even strength goals last year. That’s 3rd behind Lindholm (21) and Tkachuk (18). That’s the same as Brayden Point and more than Matthew Barzal.

Athletic reporting that negotiations have begun for VGK to sign Lehner to a long term deal.

Probably means the Knights are going to have to move MAF.

Many ppl, including myself, have said several times that Cozens would be a great target. I think maybe he should be THE #1 target.

When's the last time a prospect of Cozens' caliber was traded?

Brayden Schenn back in 2011. He was picked 5th overall in 2010 and was very highly rated when Philly acquired him in the Mike Richards deal. I remember at the time we discussed on this board about whether the Flames should deal Iginla for him.
Filip Forsberg is another one who was traded while still a prospect before graduating, but he wasn't as highly rated as Schenn at the time I don't think.

Decent examples, but like Forsberg none of these guys were top 5 already drafted prospects at the time of their trades I don't think.
Schenn is the only one I can think of who was top of the heap and still not graduated.

Schenn (the Top prospect in the league at time of trade) for Richards (Traded at 26 after the sober island events, but history of leading a team to cup finals.)
Suzuki (one of the top forward prospects in the league) for Pacioretty (29 years old, coming off very disappointing ~.5ppg season, but with 30 goal history.)
Forsberg for Erat was never a good trade so I'm not going to count it lol.
Anyways, using those two examples we have an excellent case for Monahan to be worth at least Cozens. Monahan > Pacioretty.
Edit: Actually, both these trades were composed of REMARKABLY similar packages.
Richards for Simmonds+Schenn+2nd
Pacioretty for Tatar+Suzuki+ 2nd
so a Monahan/Gaudreau trade should be at least Top 6 roster player+ top forward prospect + 2nd.
Monahan to Buffalo for Vesey+Cozens + 2nd = the closest match I could make with Buffalo. Not sure I love that for Monahan, would definitely swing at it for Johnny.

That Mike Richards trade is probably the best example of what a Monahan trade would look like. It worked for both sides.
To LA:
Mike Richards (26)
Rob Bordson
To PHI:
Brayden Schenn (19 turning 20)
Wayne Simmonds (22 turning 23)
2nd round pick
Also a comparable would be the Jeff Carter trade
To CBJ:
Jeff Carter (26)
To PHI:
Jakob Voracek (21 turning 22)
8th Overall
3rd round pick

Carter at the time was coming off back to back 40 goal campaigns iirc. I think that's what we should be hoping for in a Johnny trade but I am ready to be disappointed.
Makes me think that NJ is still a viable target: Zacha+7th overall+3rd Rounder for Johnny?

^ those picks turned out to be 2011 first-round pick (Sean Couturier) and a 2011 third-round pick (Nick Cousins).
BTW, There hasn't been any smoke around Monahan at all (just rumours of the Flames shaking up the core)

Looking at those Philly trades as the market comparable:
To CGY: 7th Overall, Ty Smith
To NJD: Johnny Gaudreau
To CGY: Dylan Cozens, Rasmus Asplund, 2nd round pick
To BUF: Sean Monahan

None of them were as highly regarded as Cozens.
Schenn is closer. But that was 10 years, and the maturing and tightening of the cap system has made young blue chippers even more valuable.

The value is good. It would put us about 3 years from being competitive even if things went great. I'd be ok with that, but I would try and trade Gio as well and insure a high draft pick next year (top 5 pick at least). Consider moving backlund the following year as well...

The Flames could go sign Hall and acquire a top flight goalie and compete next year while building with these young high end futures.

If we sign hall and swing big for a goalie I think we can stay somewhat competitive. I would be down for a gio trade in there as well, but I think you could trade both Johnny and Monahan and remain competitive or near competitive (much the same as Philly did a decade ago.)

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
So Hall, its well known he wants to sign with a contender.
The above scenario says we won't be competitive for 3 years?
They aren't signing Hall in that scenario.

Yeah, you'd have to pull off one hell of a sell job to get Hall to sign in Calgary right after dealing Monahan and Gaudreau for picks and prospects.

I can see a scenario where the Flames move Monahan and Gaudreau for primarily futures and replace Johnny with Hall and acquire another center that is rumored to be traded like Domi. Adding a top end goalie and high end futures would be part of the sell to Hall on why he should commit 6-7 years with the Flames.
Between He, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangipane, Backlund, Dube, Bennett and the young D they compete now and they have Cozens, 7th overall, and other good prospects coming in the pipeline.
Also trade for or try and sign a legit number 1 goalie. If a number 1 looks at Calgary there is a 5 year runway where they can be the uncontested starter while playing behind a team with solid young players
