I just don't think the Flames are going to risk hiring Darryl back after what happened with Peters.

Disagree... The only story that came out about him proves what everyone already knew. He is prickly and intimidating. So what? If the flames think they can only hire nice guys now, I guess they can just move back and forth between GG and ward. If tre or ownership are too worried about public fallout to make the right coaching hire, they are effectively paralyzed in their job and they should basically stop trying. Do some due diligence, talk to people in the know. Don't let Daniel Carrillo, a guy who it took far too long before he lost all credibility and who can't disappear enough from the hockey sphere, make important decisions for you with his Instagram account.

Those are my top 3 choices of “known” coaches.
Darryl Sutter has actually won a cup in this era of hockey. I’d be happy to see him return behind the bench.
I’d be overjoyed to have Darryl back.
|
Yeah I would really be stoked if they hired Darryl. At least you can expect the team to show up and give an honest effort.

Throw Gallant into the mix of those three and honestly just give us one.
At least with the pedigree they come with we can’t sit here and say we never tried.

But if we acquire Sutter (which I wouldn't mind at all), wouldn't we need to assemble a roster that would fit his needs? The Kings from the last decade were a hard nosed team with a lot of emphasis on size over speed.

So Washington has interviewed Babcock, Laviolette, and Gallant per Friedman.
There’s going to be some high level coaches available for us.
...I really hope Ward is not our HC choice.

I definitely think Sutter can adjust his style to fit the personnel he has. Calgary4Life mentions every now and then that Sutter emphasized how the Flames should be a quick-transitioning team during a TV spot a few years back.
On the topic of Sutter, I think he is the only big name who could be in contact with Calgary and not have that info leak, with how low-key he is and how tight he supposedly was with Ownership and King.
Just caught on HNIC that Capitals interviewed Gallant and Babcock this week, per Friedman.

Who are we kidding? Of course he is. I wouldn’t be shocked in the least to learn the Flames didn’t even interview any of the big names.

Being a long time fan of this team I totally expect Ward will get the job.

It is taking an abnormally long time to just confirm an interim head coach as the full time head coach.

Me too.
But I’ll dream a dream, until that dream is taken from me.

Did Treliving not interview him during his first coaching search?

Anything you can expand on?
I remember a few years back he had expressed interest in coaching again - although life certainly changes over the years. He did say in 2018 that he loved his current schedule and had no desire to be far from family though, then later took the advisory role with the Ducks.

Tell the Islanders and Capitals that coaches in the NHL are not important...
For once, let's not ask "what would the Bengals do?"

If he does it would be for us. Close to home and a window of 4 years. No one loses that drive to win.

Do you guys really feel like the Flames are a piece or two away from contention, and that there's a legit, for real, window to win, right now?
Cuz I just don't see that. There's nice pieces here for sure, but the idea that a coach takes this team to the finals or something...
I remember Sutter coming under fire here last time he was coach for having such a deliberate, boring system, and he more or less said "Hey, I'd love to play a wide open game, but we just don't have the horses."
And that's where this team is at. Swapping Reider for Jankowski etc, guys other teams wouldn't claim on waivers. That's the depth here.
