Bah, too bad they couldn't sweep those turds again.

6-1 vs them though.

So now we twist in the wind for a little bit with 3 PTBNL's on the days acquisitions.

Sure added some nice starting pitching depth, provided they can right the ship for both Stripling and Ray.

All in all, I think the Jays did alright with the deadline.

The Taijuan Walker trade is already paying dividends.

Villar is going to be a valuable player down the stretch.

Vogelbach will provide some power off the bench.

Ray has great stuff, can the get his command sorted out, if they can he has front of the rotation stuff.

Stripling is a guy who can start and pitch out of the pen and eat some innings.

I also like the idea of getting a look at some of the arms and deciding if they can help the team passed this season.

As long as they didn't give up one of their top 12/13 prospects I think they had a great deadline. So far sounds like they didn't but if they did would make me question things a little bit.

It'll be interesting to see who they gave up for Stripling. He has 3 years of control left and actually pretty good other than this weird shortened season. I imagine they didn't get him for a couple of scrubs.

Shi Davidi tweet

"The #BlueJays have added highly regarded catching prospect Alejandro Kirk to their taxi squad, per sources. He's flying with the club to Miami."

Jansen and McGuire are good defensively, but neither are hitting right now. Kirk might add some offense, he could also learn a lot from Jansen and McGuire.

Certainly interesting dynamic. Would the Jays and Padres have done this at the deadline in a normal season?

Catch lightning in a bottle to get in and once in the playoffs, and anything can happen. Same goes the other way. Jays if they didn’t go on a hot streak these last two weeks, would they have made these moves?

But, the end game here? To win a watered down WS? Not making revenue off playoffs. Of course creating a winning culture (though most of these rentals are not re signing) and if you can go all the way and win a WS, banners, even heavily asterisked ones, fly forever. But have you screwed your team for future years in the chase of this sprint to a title?

Neither the Jays or Padres "have screwed their future's" with any of the moves they made today, or this week. The Jays didn't give up any big name prospects for the rentals they snagged, and while we don't know who they gave up yet for Stripling, they have him under control for 3 more seasons.

The Jays will still have a top 5-10 farm system, and the Padres still have probably the best farm system, maybe top 2 or 3 at the worst.

Most of the guys the Padres added still have a year or more of control, do they set themselves up for a run this year and next and they still have great young players on the team and in the system.

The Jays have most of their top talent on the team, so even if they only get 3 extra games, it is most likely worth it.

There is no guarantee that there will be expanded playoffs next year or going forward, so you strike while you can.

Maybe that's because he is a PTBNL

Not sure if you're kidding or not.

He's on the 60 man player pool, he's not a PTBNL.

He's also one of their top 10 prospects, and highly doubt they would have ever included him for any of the players they added today.

Ryan Noda/Kevin Smith/Riley Adams are names that come to mind as the 3 PTBNL.

I like the moves today. Nothing earth shattering, but some older guys to take the pressure off the young heading into a possible playoff run. I don't give Shatkins much credit but today's moves were smart. No mortgaging the future while giving them a shot is a good move.

Me too.

Before the deadline the Jays rotation was Ryu, Anderson, and three of the cardboard cutouts in the stands... now they have actual major leaguers to put in the rotation and when our guys get healthy whomever doesn't make the cut for the rotation can pretty easily be shifted to the Bullpen. Villar likewise can bridge the distance between hurt Bichette and healthy Bichette and be a much better bench piece then Panik when Bichette returns (and since he can play pretty much any postion he can spell guys down the stretch).

I thought the Jays made out quite well with all their moves. Didn't rob the prospect bank, which is evident for the guys they went for. Don't work out? No biggie. Catch lightning in a bottle, or think you have something figured out for them (e.g. in a delivery) that will correct something, and, well....

The Blue Jays and Pirates nearly completed a trade sending righty Joe Musgrove from Pittsburgh to Toronto prior to yesterday’s trade deadline, Robert Murray reports (via Twitter). That arrangement “fell apart at the eleventh hour,” however, and the Jays pivoted to acquire both Robbie Ray and Ross Stripling instead.

Wow Joe Musgrove would have been quite the addition. Too bad.

Yeah, I think they supplemented the roster as well as could be hoped without losing any significant prospects.

Will be interesting to see if they can right the ship with Robbie Ray. If so, they have made out like bandits.

Stripling, who comes with two additional years of control, cost the Jays two players to be named, at least one of whom the Dodgers consider a solid prospect. But the asks for pitchers such as Clevinger and Lynn were much higher, and while Stripling is not in their class, the Jays did not consider him that big a dropoff from their level, either.
I didn't take into consideration the two years of control with Stripling which would significantly bump up his price. I wonder who the solid prospect will be. I am thinking we will see someone near the top 10, maybe a Miguel Hiraldo, go the other way. I really hope it's not Kloffenstein.

EDIT: It's Kendall Williams as the pitching prospect going to the Dodgers, Law has him as our 15th prospect, MLB Pipeline has him at #13, but he's a legit young pitcher.

You're never going to be totally healthy, but there is a pretty solid team, with a lot of depth in there. Only concern is the number of lefties
