Apparently Ray tried to change his mechanics this season. Looks like it back fired. Hopefully the Jays have a way to quickly get him back on track, he's got great stuff. His WHIP and ERA are WAAAAAY above his career norms this season.

So, quick thoughts on Ray.
At first glance I hated it.
But, they saw an opportunity here to grab a starter for cheap which I am all for, and the guy does have high K upside which means they could always use him in the pen if they can’t get his walks under control.
Fills a gap, eats some innings, didn’t cost much. All in all I’m okay with it

Ray has been better his last 3 starts, his ERA dropped from 10.59 to 7.84 in that time.

@ESPNStatsInfo
Robbie Ray has a 11.14 K per 9 IP in his career, the highest rate in MLB history (min. 100 starts).
However, Ray has also walked 4.2 batters per 9 IP, 2nd worst in MLB since 2010. The only pitcher worse in that time is Tyler Chatwood (4.7).

Here is an article on Ray's delivery change for anyone interested:
Robbie Ray’s Changes and Why Getting “Shorter” is NOT Always Better
Quote:
Ray’s notorious command issues have been something that has really held back the left-hander throughout the course of his career. In fact, you could probably make the argument that Ray should be one of the top pitchers in the league. The last three seasons, Ray has posted a K/9 mark north of 12 and has surrendered 7.7 H/9 or less. Below is a list of all of the pitchers in Major League Baseball who did that in just last year:
Justin Verlander (12.1 K/9, 5.5 H/9)
Max Scherzer (12.7 K/9, 7.5 H/9)
Gerrit Cole (13.8 K/9, 6.0 H/9)
That’s it. Oh, and Ray’s 12.13 K/9 was also good for the 14th highest mark in MLB history. His 12.11 K/9 from 2017 ranks 16th all-time.
|
Hopefully they can get him back on track in short order.

Dbacks saying they aren't going to pick up Starling Matre's option and he will go to the team with the best offer. I would love to see Marte as a Jay and for us to pick up his option

Having an outfield of Marte, Grichuk and Teoscar would be amazing.

Adding Marte and Villar wouldn't hurt my feelings. We'd be a terror on the base paths too haha

Chase Anderson has struck out the side in both innings so far. Unfortunately he's also given up 3 hits a 1 run too.

Ryu, Walker, Ray, Roark, Anderson? And does that push Pearson to the bullpen? Do we even see Nate again this season?
