If your a general contractor, I would bet, 90% of the time you hire sub’s that you have a history with. Happens all the time in businesses everywhere.

Nonetheless, this time around I would bet Treliving will/is speaking with several candidates.

Calgary is the perfect place for him to coach. Plus tell him he has unfinished business, that should get to him.
Brett was traded to the Kings in 2016 and has been the captain of their AHL affiliate in Ontario, California for the last three seasons.

According to Elite Prospects, Darryl was a senior advisor to the Ducks coaching staff this season (I don't recall hearing that before): https://www.eliteprospects.com/staff/273/darryl-sutter

Of the big three names out there not named Darryl Sutter (Gallant, Boudreau, Laviolette), I would like to see Gallant in Calgary, Boudreau would be my second choice. Laviolette is a bit of a wild card.

Gallant - I remember him as a player and really liked his game when he was at his peak. He had the right mix of skill and snarl and is what I feel the Flames identity should be. He is known to be a player's coach that promotes up-tempo, two-way play, although I really have to wonder why Florida and Vegas felt the need to move on from him.

I have a feeling that Gallant is taking the time to really pick his spot. Trying to be completely objective, it's hard to imagine the Flames would be his first choice.

Boudreau - His teams are usually exciting to watch and he get's a lot out of his offence, but I am apprehensive about how a team with questionable goaltending would do with his defensive systems.

Boudreau is a good coach, but I am not sure he is the best coach for this team at this time unless the roster changes significantly.

Laviolette - Known to be a really intense SOB and a bit intimidating, but gets results at least in the short term. If Monahan and Gaudreau ran Hartley out of town for being a meanie, I don't think they will respect Laviolette. Also, apparently he doesn't want to be in Canada.

I suspect if Treliving had his pick, he would go with Laviolette for the short term success potential that coaches like him have. He has to be feeling the heat at this point to show substantial results with the core that he has.

I like the idea of the Flames getting one of the big three names available, but I do hope they keep Ward. Ward comes across to me as a really good team guy capable of building a sense of togetherness and playing for each other. Both the way Ward has addressed questions during every question period and by how the players have spoken in postseason interviews, I get the sense the like Ward and have become a tight and dedicated team with Ward as coach.

Boudreau or Gallant as head coach with Ward as his assistant would give me confidence. If they were to ride with Ward for another season, I wouldn't be that upset.

I think Jim Montgomery is in this class of coach too. He's only coached a year and a half and is 17 games over .500, and the Stars advanced to the 2nd round under him. If he has his persona demons under control, he would be an excellent choice for any team, but with McGrattan on staff, I think that extra support would make Calgary a great fit for him.

People keep mentioning Babcock, moreso in the trade thread for whatever reason, but I was wondering... I know he's not banned by the league or anything, but what are the odds he lands another job based on what came out as he left his last one? Second chance mentality?

Literally the only mention I saw in that thread, was me when I answered someone's question about what coaches were available and he was one of a bunch of names listed.

I dont see Treliving bringing in Babcock after the Peters Fiasco. Especially as Peters was a Babcock protege. It would be begging for another backfire.

I haven't seen anyone suggest Babcock would be a good option

Not only would BT not even entertain it but the Flames are not ponying up the amount of money it would take for him to forgo what the Leafs owe him.

I could see it. I think I read somewhere he's not interested in coaching in Canada, which is a shame he's one of my favs

13. I don’t believe Calgary wants to take a long time to decide on Geoff Ward’s future. Maybe a week or two. Not fair to him to wait too long, but it sure sounds like the Flames wanted to avoid the emotion of the moment being a factor in their decision. Ward stabilized them in a very difficult situation.

15. Washington has permission to talk to Peter Laviolette, and he is very much a contender.

16. Former Capitals coach Todd Reirden could be on the radar in both Florida and Pittsburgh as an assistant. The Penguins’ connection is obvious (he used to work there), while the Panthers may replace Mike Kitchen, who did not join them in the bubble. (This, of course, is pending any head coaching jobs he pursues.)

Maybe "keep" mentioning was an exaggeration, just have seen his name a couple times as a potential hire (by any team) in different threads recently so thought I'd ask what people thought.

I see the “You Be The Boss” poll in the Sun has 46% saying that Ward should remain head coach and only 38% saying we need a new head coach. I find that somewhat hard to believe. I think if Ward is named the full time head coach that the team continues to spin its wheels being a team just good enough to make the playoffs and crash and burn in the first round.

Why do you find these results hard to believe?

I'm not a Laviolette fan. I'm not sure why. There is no doubt he is a good coach. Just preference maybe. For me, I'd like to see Boudreau get the job because of his personality. He wears his heart on his sleeve, is great with the media, is a player's coach and loves coaching. I think fans would love him in Calgary.

Right after the elimination I was 50/50 on whether Ward should come back or not, but after stewing on it for a couple of weeks I think he should return.

I really only have one major criticism in his decision making and that is the Talbot pull in game 6. Other than that he always seemed to have a good beat on the team. He is a rookie head coach, so mistakes are expected, but I see the potential for him to turn into a great coach.

The players seem to respect him and really bought in during the fiasco in the regular season. He had the team playing pretty solid defensive hockey in the playoffs too. Lucic talked about how Ward gives every player a purpose and a role on the team. As a fan I really got the sense that the team had belief in themselves under Ward.

Young players continued to develop, he wasn't afraid to make line up changes and we were 10 seconds from having Dallas on the ropes without our best player. With Dallas now steam rolling Colorado, maybe we aren't giving that team enough credit for how good they are.

I think Tre should keep him.

I've always wondered why Florida and Vegas moved on quickly from Gallant as well...seems odd

IMO this is a very valid question. I have no doubt Treliving has insight into this and it may be nothing but entirely possible we’ll never know.
