What about something around Gaudreau and Ekblad?
A top 4 of Ekblad, Andersson, Hanifin and Valimaki would be fantastic for years to come. With Gaudreau's salary being allocated to replacing Brodie, it would also open up the opportunity to pursue a FA forward to plug that hole.

Makes sense for the Flames, makes no sense for the Panthers. Their defense is trash as it is.

Their ownership wants to cut salary and they don't seem to care how they do it, look at the trade deadline for example and the way they basically gave away Trochek.

Yeah I believe ownership wants to cut $10M in salary? I have a feeling someone significant is getting moved out of Florida.

And with Ekblad making 7.5m for the next 5 years, I could easily see it being him since Huberdeau and Barkov are signed to bargain contracts. I also don't see anyone taking on the Yandle, Stralman and Matheson contracts which total over 16.5m over the next two years.

They have like 20 million in cap space if they let both Hoffman and Dadonov walk.

It's going to be one of Yandle or Matheson that gets moved would be my guess. Probabaly Yandle. He has value with the amount of points he puts up.
They need to give up picks and prospects to move him though if they want minimal salary coming back.

I'll throw a proposal in the ring.
Gaudreau to NJ for Bratt, Severson, pick 20, and a 2021 2nd and 3rd.

The Panthers are weirdos and do some dumb ####, but Q is no dummy as far as I can tell and he's supposedly got a say in roster decisions. I dont think you could pry guys like Ekblad or Barkov away from him unless it was out of his cold, dead hands.

I feel like that's a bit much coming from NJ, but I do like it.
Maybe Kylington on our end makes it closer.

Love ya Scorp, but not digging that proposal one bit.
Much rather just keep Johnny.

The duality of man. ^
Bratt reminds me a lot of Lindholm. Can play both wings. Responsible player. I don't know if the Devils move him, to be honest.
They probably do move Severson. He's a little old for them, I think. But he's a solid RHD signed at a good rate for a few more years. Very Brodie-ish player.
The picks are, well, picks. Gives the Flames three more bullets in the chamber.

Haha that’s pretty funny actually. Maybe I’m not giving those guys enough credit.
It just seems like a strategy to continue to wallow in mediocrity to me. Let’s continue to build with Jonny and support him by adding better players.
Shipping him out for that package leaves us devoid of an offensive star and leaves us with a 2nd/3rd liner at best, a 4/5 dman and some draft picks.
Nothing wrong with those players, but I’m not interested in them in a Gaudreau trade.

Bratt juuuuuust turned 22, by the way. He already has three good seasons under his belt.
I'd rather him than most of the targets in this thread... IMO there is a lot of upside there. I think his floor is what Reinhart is currently.

Replace Severson with Zacha, replace the 2021 2nd with Mcleod, add kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste and you have a trade.

You want Zacha? I'm not enamoured with that player at all. Reminds me a lot of Jankowski. Severson is a solid top-four NHL RHD on a good contract.
And I'm not a fan of McLeod either. I'd rather the Flames' scouting staff get a chance at making a pick.

Zacha? Janko? You sir are off your rocker. Zacha hits and forchecks. Only semblance is lack of production. He plays better everywhere else. Also is only 23, and logs more icetime by double. Not that that is a glowing mark on his lack of production. Vaatly different players.
And McLeod is ripe. His time is now. RHS RW/C with speed. PK usefulness. Whats not to like, these are players that fit in today. Keeps the window open. And cost controlled, and cheap.
Besides, my dream defense addition this offseason is another ex devil Sami Vatanen.

Eh, I guess you could say McLeod's time is now. 14 goals in 108 AHL games and 0 goals in 33 NHL games doesn't give me a lot of hope, though. Both Zacha and McLeod were drafted under a now-gone and very unsuccessful Devils scouting staff that prioritized, above all else, "big."
I don't see the need for more centres like Zacha in the Flames' system when they're about to lose four or five defensemen. I'd rather address that. But I'll watch some film of Zacha, he does seem like the kind of guy Calgary might want. I'd certainly much rather him over McLeod.
Edit: by the way, Zacha had fewer hits this year than Sean Monahan.
