The style of hockey Benn plays is built for playoffs. That is a monster contract, but wouldn’t you love to structure a trade for him that starts with Johnny?
What would it take to get that deal done?
Johnny plus a first?

I wouldn't take Benn for free.
9.5 mill until 2025. He's 31.
Had 39 points in 69 games this year. 53 points in 78 games last year.
One of the scariest contracts in the league IMO.

Yikes.
Talk about under valuing your own players.

Benn has a full no-move and five years left on a deal with a $9.5 million AAV.
I wouldn't claim that contract on waivers.

Lol
Benn is 31 years old. He had 39 points in 69 games this year, and 53 in 78 last year and he is clearly on the decline.
Oh and he has 5 years left at a $9.5M cap hit.
If you trade Johnny for that declining player with that contract you would be the worst GM in the league.
If you want to have a look at what Benn’s decline is going to look like then you have to look no further than his teammate in Dallas now in Corey Perry. They have similar arcs after turning 30.

Ya, maybe.
But, you take one player off one team and put him on the other and the Flames destroy Dallas. IMO.

Benn has never been a good skater, he's been in decline but I think he's about to go off a cliff-just kinda prolonging the inevitable.

Tkachuk - Monahan - Lindholm
Gaudreau - Bennett - Anderson
Mangiapane - Backlund - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Reider
Giordano - Montour
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Soucy
Andersen
Broissoit
Better or worse than the 2019/20 Flames?

My trade proposal is not a great one, in hindsight.
But I stand by my point that the Flames with Benn beat the Stars with Johnny in the first round this year.

Hard to say ultimately, but I love your inclusion of Anderson, Andersen, and Montour. I think Soucy is a little overrated on this board though.

I don't know when Gaudreau's bonus structure comes into effect or whether anything the PA has voted on has deferred those bonuses like they've deferred free agency and the draft, but that will be a significant factor as well.
the price for gaudreau will be a lot lower if the Flames can find someone to take him before that 3 million dollar bonus is due. Knowing the flames ownership I'd suggest that's a pretty big pinch point too.
If the bonus has already been paid out, price goes up.

No, the difference in the series was that the Flames didn’t have an answer for Miro Heiskanan and John Klingberg who combined for 14 points the in the 6 games they each played. They controlled and dominated the series and forced the Flames to play their style.
Gaudreau and Benn both had pretty small contributions by comparison IMO.

I don't feel so bad anymore, with how the Stars are playing against Colorado.

If we are trading for a dman from Buffalo I’d rather it’s Ristolainen than Montour.
Both have poor advanced stats but at least Ristolainen:
- Plays tougher top pairing minutes
- Plays physical (top 10 in the league in hits)
- Would be a Finn to pair with Valimaki
Montour actually has worse advanced stats, and played more sheltered minutes, and doesn’t bring an element our d-core doesn’t have.
One thing with d-men is slotting means a lot and I think Ristolainen in a second or third pairing role suddenly looks a lot better than when he’s on a top pairing being forced into tough matchups.
I do have a feeling we could see a deal with Buffalo that’s centered around their 8th overall pick, prospect, and one of Montour/Ristolainen. If that happens though I hope it’s Ristolainen.

Agree with you that Heiskanan was a better player than both Benn and Johnny in that series.
But that isn’t what I was saying. Who was is it that Ben stared down during game 2 or 3? Not saying that won them the series by any means, but I don’t know. Just the style of hockey he plays, it is similar to Iggy.
The flames with Iggy instead of Johnny also beat the stars, imo.

What do his stats look like from previous years? There's talk that Montour's decline this year is because of Kruger, and he's not the only one.

I’m still skeptical. Benn and Gaudreau both had 2 goals and 2 assists in the series and Iggy as good as he was, helped the Flames reach the second round once over the course of 16 years.
I just don’t think superstar wingers make as much of a difference as #1 centers or #1 defensemen in the playoffs. Getzlaf, Mackinnon and Heiskanen were probably the biggest reasons the Flames lost their last 4 playoff series.

To me it is very clear BT loves Gaudreau on this team. I would be absolutely shocked if he is traded despite what Eric Francis says whom we know has a history of knowing the square root of F all.
