There is a player that I'm interested in for my AHL team, but has the potential to put me over the amount of cap I have until he is sent down, and I don't know if that disqualifies me from attempting his acquisition during free agency.

Free Agency is done in batches, so
Batch1 may be the top 5 players in every position, or whatever(but a set list of players and you can only bid on this round).
Batch 2 will involve any players not signed in the first batch and also the next group of players. This will go on with a new batch till all top rated players have been in batches.
The
second last Batch with will be an open one (meaning you can bid on anyone, there's no list of who you can bid on. For this batch and all before you must have the cap space for your bids
The
Final Batch, is also an open batch but you don't need to have the cap room to make a bid
So if you wish to make a bid on that player, you either
1. need to have the cap room.
2. Wait till the final batch that doesn't require you to have the cap space
3. Make a trade or send someone down to free up the cap space.
