1. Ward is kept as head coach
2. Gaudreau to NJ for two 1sts (VAN & ARZ)
3. Hannifin for Domi +
4. All UFA D walk and Tre picks up a few bargain D for the bottom pairing

1. Ward is kept as head coach (ownership won't pay for top tier coach)
2. Brodie is re-signed at similar cap hit.
3. Hamonic walks as UFA.
4. Hall is signed
5. Gaudreau is traded to Philly in deal around Nolan Patrick.
6. Talbot signs 2 year deal.

This would leave the Flames with a ton of cap space and no good defensemen ehh?

There are always decent depth defenseman available. Giving a guy like Kylington more ice time plus the team being impressed by Mackie gives them some options and flexibility as well.

Lets give this a crack:

1. I predict the Flames lock up Hall long term
2. I predict Gaudreau gets traded, the return is underwhelming
3. I predict the Flames re-sign Talbot for more than the CP collective is comfortable with.
4. I predict Brodie heads to Toronto and Hamonic to WPG.
5. I predict the Flames acquire Josh Anderson but overpay
6. I predict the Flames stick with Ward (dont want to pay)
7. I predict the Flames falter next season and finish in the bottom 5 landing us a top 3 pick next year

So you would just leave 16 million or so in free cap?

* Treliving stays on as GM
* Ward stays on as head coach
* Gaudreau traded to Flyers or CBJ. CP melts down over return.
* Monahan traded to Jets or Sabres
* Bennet traded to Leafs
* Getzlaf acquired in trade, salary dump (Ryan?) and picks go the other way
* Brodie, Hamonic, Gustafsson, Forbert walk
* Hall signed to long-term deal
* Brendan Dillon signed

I predict the Flames will:

Get Hall but pay more than everyone thinks they should
Trade Gaudreau for a young player on an ELC that turns into a solid 3rd liner and a second
They re-sign Talbot to a 4x4 deal extending our goalie woes for the foreseeable future
Trade the first round pick for a #4 D
Overpay for a guy like Anderson in hopes he turns into a top 6 winger, he doesn't.
Keep Ward because they have no other options (top tier coaches aren't coming)
Mortgage more of the future at the deadline in hopes of just making it (cause "anything can happen" lol)
Miss the playoffs by 3 points and get #13 pick

1) Geoff Ward has the interim tag removed
2) Gaudreau is traded to Philly for Gostisbehere + Frost + 1st (PHI) + Conditional 1st (Flyers win Cup in 2021 or 2022, or Gaudreau Re-signs with Flyers)
3) Hanifin is traded to New Jersey for Zacha + 1st (PHX)
4) Monahan is traded to Buffalo for 1st (Buffalo 8th overall) and Ristolainen
5) Flames Sign Hall (6 x $8) & Demelo (2 x $2); Re-sign Talbot (2 x $3.5), Reider (1 x $1), & Mangiapane (2 x $3.5)

Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Hall-Zacha-Lindholm
Frost - Bennett - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Gawdin
Reider

Giordano - Andersson
Valimaki - Ristolainen
Gostisbehere - Demelo
Kylington

Talbot
Rittich

Flames have 8th (BUF), 18th (PHX), 19th (CGY), 28th (PHI) picks to try to draft a top line center or move in a deal for one.

Flames would have about $2M in Cap Space.

That would be one hell of an entertaining draft day!

1) Trade Gaudreau for Couturier just because I like that 'rumour'
2) Sign Hall
3) Find another basement bargain coach and go with a controversial two head coach model
4) Sign an older goalie to a one or two year deal

Knowing this team. I expect us to sign excessive defensive depth and over pay for a free agent winger. There will be one good trade to balance things out.
Sign vatanan or Barrie
Bring back stone/forbert and Hamonic or brodie
Deal backlund for ristolainen or Andersen from Columbus depending on how free agency goes

1. Ward remains as coach
2. Gaudreau is traded
3. Hall is signed
4. A surprise trade is made to get another 1st round pick, + (Monahan or Giordano or Backlund or hanafin)
5. Rittich is traded, Talbot is signed, and another goalie becomes part of the tandem

Honestly why would Hall come here if “it’s about winning?”

because the line between winning and losing is razor this in this league, and cherry picking a spot generally doesn't work.

Colorado won't give term, Hall wants term.
Vegas has no cap-space.

Those are probably the only two spots that you could cherry pick as being close to the cup.

So, you look for teams that might be close to taking that next step, and what other parts fit for you. As bitter as we may be today - this team could still take a big step with a smart off-season from management. If you're listening to TheFourthPeriod, the Flames may also be going out and acquiring his rights.

Who would have guessed at the beginning of last year that STL was the place to go?

Like ComixZone said, the difference between winning and not is razor thin. As a player, you're looking for a team that is trying to win, has good players, and looks to be a good fit for you.

All of those things are met with Calgary, plus he has other ties to make it attractive.

Look at the roster we just played with and look at how close we got to winning these games. Put Hall into the depth. So, say put Hall in Lucic's spot and put Lucic is Jankowski/Rinaldo's spot. We win that series.

Tough to view it that way as you can't manage your team in isolation without looking at how other teams improve themselves, but the painful truth is this team as it is just isn't that far off.

I still don't think "blowing it up" is a bad approach - as I think Tree pooched this rebuild with impatience, but we are where we are and I'm not sure we can count on Tree taking apart the team he has built over 6 years.

Yeah I would be good with a rebuild as well, but I don't see it happening. IF you're continuing to work with, and build, the current core, adding Hall is a good addition if you can get him.

I wouldn't take Ristolainen for free, never mind for Hanafin.
