I would be surprised actually if Ward returns as head coach.

For probably the first time since becoming the GM, Treliving is probably feeling like he is on the hot seat. I can't imagine that he is going to go with another relatively unproven head coach, who arguably got out-coached this series.

I would love Darryl back here. I recall that during the Peters hiring process, it was leaked that the owners were wanting to bring Darryl back, but left it in Treliving's hands.

As for Calgary not being a 'Sutter team' - I am not sure that's 100% accurate. The team is atrocious defensively, and I think that Darryl would really go a long way in fixing that.

On top of that - and this is something that I mentioned previously here - that I caught Darryl on either TSN or Sportsnet (I still can't remember which one) doing some analysis work. I thought he got Calgary bang-on - he stated that Calgary has stopped transitioning quickly, and he felt that in today's NHL, every team better be able to transition quickly.

That made me think that Darryl is not all about 'grinding out the wins'. I would be very interested to see him coming in with this exact same roster (not that I don't think changes need to be made - heck, I voted for a rebuild!). I am so interested to see what a proven, experienced coach who has a track record of making his teams better than expected (at least for a time). I still believe coaching has a lot to do with this team's issues. Flames haven't brought in a competent coach since Hartley IMO, and even then people feel he wasn't very competent, so you have to go all the way back to Darryl himself to get any sort of consensus on this board as to who was a competent head coach for the Flames.

Laviolette, Darryl, Gallant - those are my three choices in order. I am wary of Bruce Boudreau - he isn't a winner at the NHL level, and has had great teams. I never once thought that his teams were ever 'better than the sum of their parts', and this is what I look for in a coach. That's just my opinion.

Green, Cooper, Bednar, Berube, Brind'Amour, even Mike Sullivan when he was first hired by the Pens. All inexperienced coaches who are succeeding

Then you have all the experienced coaches in and out of Edmonton with no success.

I want the Flames to hire a new coach, preferably an experience one, but the bigger problem is the players

This is precisely why I wanted Alain vilgneault when he was available. That canucks cup run team was built on winning the puck back in their own zone, and immediately moving the puck up ice. They weren't the fastest skating teams but their ability to make quick outlets and transition the puck created so much more speed to their attack.

I completely agree that creating clean/fast breakouts are a massive part of what successful teams do in today's game.

Not only is a fast-paced transition game more suited to the Flames' roster, but it is much more entertaining style of play for fans.

He needs to fix the freaking breakout. The flames fold like a papier-mâché tent when teams forecheck them. This little triangle tic tac on the side wall close to their own blue line is easier to read than a picture book for three year olds.

I’m not sold on him, didn’t seem to figure out the X as Os. Results were ok and the players seem to like him.

The biggest culprit was that the top players weren’t the top players. This team limped in to the playoffs with the top line missing.

I want to see Monahan with Tkachuk, Gaudreau with Backlund and Lindholm.

Third line you keep as is.

Get Valimaki in the line up and another winger to play with Monahan.

I thought I was taking crazy pills alone on this one!

Play transition - Score 3 quick goals on Dallas.

IMMEDIATELY revert to triple D to D passes to go up ice as a 5 man unit...become the first team in playoff history to turn a 3 goal lead into a 4 goal deficit.

But we still never play quick transition despite having Gio Brodie Hanifin Andersson Gustavsson on the back end...this team should've been dominating through transition like the 18-19 season.

Then when the opposition adjusts...change up the style, make them cheat or over extend! At least be a part of the coaching battle!!!

You run the same breakout and same zone entry every game and you're not going to stand much of a chance against a real coach.

I really wish I could see what Tortorella would do with this group.

Oh man. It would either be a 2014 Canucks-level disaster or they'd win the Cup.

I really don't get where people get this idea. The Flames are probably among the most patient teams in the league with their coaches. Despite generally having bad to terrible performance as a team, they almost never fire a coach mid-season, and everyone gets 2-3 seasons even if they've shown nothing special and bring no success.

There hasn't been a single-season coach in this team in over a decade, last one was Jim Playfair back in 2006-07.

I have also literally never heard anyone outside this board even discuss the idea that our roster is somehow coach killers. Again in these playoffs it was very clear that the team plays exactly the way the coach wants, whether it works

That goalie pull in game six sealed it for me. Rittich was ice cold. Talbot was the only reason we were in it. Take a time out. Anything... ugh. I'm still in painnnnnn

The Flames seem to fill the roster with "high maintenance" players that are satisfied with their lottery winnings of being in the NHL.

They need a coach that commands respect.

That said

They have to let Ward go because he let Tkachuk get injured against the Stars.

What was he thinking?

The year Gulutzan got fired, they were playing Gulutzan's systems exactly as he wanted it too.

The Flames need a special coach that can make Bennett play up to his potential.

The fact that almost all the posters knew that Bennett has the talent and focus and would have a good playoffs shows that basically all the coaches since Hartley are failures.

The interview process for a new coach needs to have how do you handle Bennett and part of the coaches salary/bonus tied to the performance of Bennett.

Agreed.

Hartley got replaced because he wasn't the new GM's guy. Gulutzan got replaced because he was terrible. Peterson basically forced the Flames to fire him because of his past.

That's only one firing based on the team's performance under the coach, and he was a truly awful coach that shouldn't have been hired in the first place.

Hartley did more for team unity sending out 5 thugs to beat up on Vancouver than any coach has done since.

Hartley had the Flames playing that style but he wasn't the GM's guy. The Flames were were suited to that style of play though.

It would be so Flames to keep a head coach that was outmatched by a relic like Rick Bowness.
