That's interesting.
One consideration though is that before Tallon was fired, the big rumour out of Florida was he had been instructed to cut $10m from the payroll for next season.
It's arguable that Huberdeau is the more valuable asset as well because of recency bias, cap hit and remainer term. I don't know if it's true but I think it's arguable.
I could see a multi-player deal in this instance where Matheson comes back with Huberdeau. Maybe prospect John Ludwig outta Kamloops to take matheson on.
Maybe include Ryan with some salary retained? I like Bennett more at the cheaper cap hit.
I like the idea of taking advtange of a franchise in transition.

Doesn't Huberdeau have a NMC? Would he waive to come to Calgary?

That's probably what every other GM is thinking about the Flames.

Pat just threw out Huberdeau's name as an example of, if the Flames are looking to make a 'hockey trade', targeting similar underperforming teams. He never implied that this was Gaudreau's worth.

Should do a tank-build but will say he was in on Hall, Lerner, Holtby, Pietrangelo and had a trade in place for Barzal but something happened to the fax machine and instead they landed Corey Crawford, Mikko Koivu and Ryan Callahan to 5 year deals.

Kucherov of more average size than small. He also has a bit more physicality to his game.

Deal. Send over the paperwork and get on the trade call with the NHL. We'll even throw in Jankowski.

But what’s the point? We’re still weak as hell at centre.
I’d much sooner retain on Johnny and try and get Frost/picks. Or a good pick elsewhere. Team needs centres, not wingers.

Monahan+Johnny for Aho+a draft pick. Use the savings to sign Toffoli. Pass the C to Tkachuk. And now you have a team full of two-way players. That's the new identity of the team - no other team would have so many players willing to play a full 200ft game:
Tkachuk Aho Toffoli
Mangiapane Backlund Lindholm
Dube Bennett Ryan
Lucic Janko Robinson
Are you getting a maximum return for Johnny and Monahan? Sort of - maybe not equal talent, but you're adding a piece that will change the culture in the room and cement a core group to hardworking two-way players. To me, that's worth "losing" a trade for.

Plenty of good ideas so far in this thread, and a lot of the deals proposed may be an improvement on the sad state of affairs for the last several decades. But I have to agree, "It doesn't matter. Whatever is done, won't work". I don't know for a fact that there is a banner saying that hanging in either the offices or the dressing room, but I just know that it is true...

I kinda don't want to trade Mony, if possible. I would love it if he were pushed down to the #2C spot though, and a pkg of Johnny plus got us a new #1 guy. Not gonna happen, but it would be nice.

I’m a big fan of the prospect Cozens out of Buffalo. Before there have been many suggestions about trading Johnny to Buffalo for a package that includes Cozens. The truth is they need a 2nd line center far more than a LW. What about trading Mony instead for Cozens straight up? I know a lot of you will think it’s not a good enough return. The thing is in the flat cap world , cap space is going to be a huge bargaining chip.

Giordano, Brodie, Backlund, Monny and Johnny. These are the core players still on the team since the post-Iginla era began. This is the core that:
1. loses every season opener and every game 2 in the playoffs
2. lost 25+ straight games in Anaheim
3. crumbled under pressure everytime there was an ounce of adversity
4. gone through too many coaches to count
5. and have mired this team in mediocrity for 7+ seasons.
Individually I love all of them and no one player is responsible for this team's lack of success. But that is the core of this team right now and they are responsible for the team culture.
I think in order for this team to move forward in a new, fresh and different direction, AT LEAST 3 of those players need to go. I personally trade Monny and Johnny and let Brodie walk. Brodie is still valuable but we need a new look and have to try something different. We need guys like Tkachuk, Dube, Andersson and Lindholm to be the new core and culture of this team.
