Ohh man I forgot about that deal - similar questions about ability to contribute to a winning team too.

In the end that deal worked out to.

Yeah, and while Shane Bowers doesn't look like much now, at the time of the trade Ottawa had just picked him in the 1st round a few months before the trade. After the Turris flip it's roughly the equivalent of two 1sts, three 2nds and a 3rd.

If Tre trades Mony he better not #### it up.

One of the best trades in history. Absolute genius by Sakic.

Yeah if Treliving could get even just the pieces that were a top 15 1st and Girard (who is a top pairing d-man) i’d probably be okay with the return. Let alone all the rest.
I worry that COVID-19 is going to make this a weird draft and offseason though.

Are teams going to want to make big deals or trade futures when they have no idea when the season is going to start again and when they will be able to play in actual stadiums with fans?

As usual the Flames timing on stuff like this is ####ty.

Alright, will never happen but there is something mentally satisfying about blowing this team sky high after yet another season ending debacle last night...
 Trade #1 at the draft:

To Ottawa - Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett
To Calgary - Colin White, Josh Norris, 3rd overall, NYI 1st rounder, 33rd overall

This one is gonna piss some people off, but the goal in a blow up would be to make sure the next "era" actually has elite cup contending center depth.

 Trade #2 at the draft:

To Buffalo - Sean Monahan, Noah Hanifin
To Calgary - Kyle Okposo (cap dump duh), Brandon Montour, William Borgen, Dylan Cozens, 8th overall

 Trade #3 off season:

To Philly - Johnny Gaudreau, Oliver Kylington, Mark Jankowski
To Calgary - Oscar Lindblom, Travis Sanheim, Nolan Patrick

 Trade #4 off season:

 To NYI - Mark Giordano ($3,375,000 - 50% retained)
To Calgary - Thomas Hickey, Oliver Wahlstrom

With the retention combined with Hickey @ $2.5 million AAV the Isles would be replacing Hickey with Gio for $875k against the cap, same term. That's gotta worth a decent prospect no?

The draft trades are done on the draft floor when the Flames know Quinton Byfield is available at #3 and Jake Sanderson is available at #8.

Flames also pick 19th overall, early 20's with the Isles pick, 33rd overall (Sens) and 45th overall (Flames), plus a bunch of other mid and late round picks.

 Key C prospects added:

 Cozens, Byfield, Patrick, Norris

If you don't end up with a Cup contending center core from this then I don't know what to say.....

"Tank" roster for the next season:

 Lindblom - Backlund - Lindholm (That's a SWEet line)
 Mangiapane - Ryan - White
 Dube - Nolan - Okposo
 Lucic - Norris - Wahlstrom

Cozens and Byfield back to dominate juniors and the world juniors COVID pending
Ryan is a rental at the deadline
Backlund's NTC becomes limited during the next off season

 Sanheim - Andersson
 Hickey - Montour
 Valimaki - Borgen

Sanderson and Mackey in the system

 Rittich

Ritter the only NHL goalie signed, try to trade for Georgiev maybe?

Anyways, there is like $16 million of cap space left so I'd also try to get more assets by taking on cap dumps like the following:

 Alzner from MTL
 Bjugsadt from PIT

 etc...

^^ I don't think Philly does that trade, or goes anywhere near it.
 To Philly: Gaudreau (50% retained)
 To Calgary: Frost, 2020 1st, 2021 1st

That's probably about what Philly could do.

I do love the other ones.

Ottawa gets the Tkachuk brothers, we get Byfield, and Ottawa can still draft Rossi, Perfetti, or Lundell at 5th. Too much coming from Ottawa though. Probably simplify it to Tkachuk + Bennett for 3rd + NYI's 1st + 33rd overall.

They need to send cap back, no way around it.

Maybe Ghost instead of Sanheim in my proposal?

Yeah, retain on Johnny and take Ghost back. That gives Philly over 1M+ in new cap-space after the trade.

I honestly dont see Sens doing a trade like that for Tkachuk and Bennett as well, especially with Byfield being potentially available at No. 3

 Trade 1
 To Buff: Monahan+Kylington
To CGY: Cozens+Risto/Montour/Miller (whichever right D they want to get rid of the most)

 To NJ: Gaudreau
 To CGY: 7th overall, Zacha

Ideally the team would find a way to move Ryan and Rittich’s cap hits with minimal money coming back.

They could still look to chase Hall, and Lehner in free agency.

I like the deals but I don't know if I'm out to lunch but would probably want one more piece in each deal. From Buffalo, another draft pick or Mittelstadt and from the devils, one of their prospects like Foote or Smith.

I thought about squeezing Smith in the Devils deal but with how down on Gaudreau everyone is I figured the lynch mob would come out with cries of being a homer.

I guess it all depends on which RHD the Sabres give up in the Monahan deal.

Buffalo could also go out and get both

To Buff: Monahan, Gaudreau, 2nd
To CGY: Reinhart, Montour, Cozens, 8th overall

Francis is on the Vancouver sportsnet radio right now and ripping into Johnny pretty hard.
 To paraphrase:
 -100% have to trade him
-find a team that wants regular season points and jersey sales, don't care about playoffs
-he was completely pedestrian these playoffs
-if he showed up even 1 game, we probably win this series
-conclusive he's not capable of playing big boy hockey

Meh. Francis opinion carries no weight. He embarrassed himself last season after the the loss to the Avs calling out players like Monahan who was injured.

Edit: He's now doubling down saying Jeff Ward is absolutely the "guy" as head coach. Calling it nonsense that the Flames should be going after Laviolette and others because they won't pay (that may be true) for those guys.

If Francis says something that I agree with, it makes me want to re-evaluate my opinion.
His ability to be 100% wrong is actually quite impressive.

Who's letting Francis be the "Flames guy" on other stations?

He's the resident media nutjob. Has no inside track on the team and is constantly wrong with all his predictions.
