Incredible asset expenditure. Instead of low-balling a home-grown player in Kulak and then trading him out of spite for exercising his CBA-given right to arbitration, we could have signed him for ~$1 million and been in the same place.

Rittich can be a backup...pretty tough spot after not playing a game in 5 months

I was being facetious of course with the summer tournament comment but for several reasons at least to me this doesn’t feel like a real playoff exit.
Have been a season ticket holder forever and can’t wait until this COVID thing is beaten and can be back at the Dome cheering on the Flames.

Really though, not a terribly surprising statistic. When the flames were up 3 every inch of my being knew the Flames were going to blow that lead. I have followed this team, as have many of us, for decades, and know how this team operates. There was nothing stopping the Flames from blowing this lead tonight. They knew it the second that first Dallas goal went in, and I think we all kind of knew it too.

I was mad after game four. When they failed to take the 3-1 lead.
Upset after game 5 when they came out flat.
...and now I don’t even care.
Blow it up.

Gaudreau can be a top line winger on a championship team.
Monahan however can not be a top line center on a championship team.

Can we just send this team to Seattle in exchange for the expansion team? The Kraken will win a play-off round long before this team ever does again.

How? The Flames were absolutely dominating and Talbot couldn’t make a save to save his life.
I don’t necessarily agree with the decision to pull him but had Rittich come in and locked it down Ward looks like a genius.
This is on both goaltenders. Calgary had 3 goals before Dallas even had a shot. Their goaltending absolutely let them down tonight.
Now, if we want to look at the series as a whole then yeah, Talbot was great. But tonight was 100% on the goaltending.

This is the first time I’ve said it’s time to move on from Treliving. His coaching decisions were the detriment of his time as GM.
Fire Hartley after his goalies don’t show up only 1 year after he wins the Jack Adams. Lots of people say he had to go and that the players hated him, but he got the most out of this core when it mattered most.
After firing Hartley, he brings in Gulutzen who has no track record. One of the worst coaching hires I’ve ever witnessed.
Fire him and bring in an old school, hard ass coach in Peters. The problem is that he had never proven anything. Usually the hard ass coaches are more effective when they’ve won something. That’s my take.
Then they fire him after his inexcusable racist comments and let another unproven NHL coach Ward ride it out. That’s sometimes the right option, but not when Gallant and Laviolette are free.
How are players supposed to develop and succeed when all of that is going on? Gulutzen, Peters then Ward? Brutal.

I feel bad for Talbot and Rittich, this is the kind of loss that stays with you forever.
Other than that I'm kind of okay with the game. Every player showed up to play, they started well, got some goals. Dallas was going to have a pushback. Then there was a a goaltending collapse, and the game was out of reach. I'm actually happy with the way most players kept pushing even when the loss was inevitable. It's incredibly deflating to put up a good effort and have it all undone by things mostly beyond your control. Dallas also got all the luck there with the bounces.
But mostly this game was a goaltending loss. Dallas earned the series win though. They were the better team in 4 out of six games. They lost one of the games they were better in but got a freebie here to make up for it.
Now that said, yeah, Monahan and Gaudreau are not good enough to carry a team offensively in the playoffs. I don't know what's up with Monahan especially, his shot seems completely gone. We used to call him moneyhands because he was a premiere sniper who buried almost every chmace he got. Now he can't even hit the net most of the time.
The upside is that both Monahan and Gaudreau are on very affordable, tradeable contracts. They're not terrible players, nor are they generally speaking even overpaid. They're not just as good as what almost every other team has in their first line. Lindholm was another big disappointment.
A player by player post mortem is probably saved for later.
Ward wasn't terrible, but wasn't very good either. As expected. That said, he did get the team to give a consistent effort.
