Wow Bingo, still fighting that one, eh? Do you have another machine in the house that will run an AGP card? How old is your mother board? My first thoughts are a bad AGP card but since nothing has been working all that well for you, it could be a bad mobo or even Power supply.

Frustrating (I have a system that is giving me grief as well).
If a full re-install of XP is still giving you issues perhaps is it a BIOS issue?
Is there an onboard video that needs to be turned off? Is there a newer bios version that could be flashed?

You know, I'm starting to wonder about DirectX issues Bingo. I'm trying to wrap my brain around this one. OK, your card is able to support DirectX 9. These are the drivers you should be using if you haven't got them already.
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html
Man, this kinda stuff is hard to diagnose over the net. These drivers were relased Jan 10/07 so they are the most recent. Unfortunatley it does not seem to say what version of DirectX is included. Your card is designed for DirectX 9 but I think we are up to 9C or something like that these days.

I'm wondering if it's BIOS as well. There isn't any hint of a onboard video selection to pick at. I have that VIA 4in1 chipset driver thing though so it's sort of buried.
Maybe put up the BIOS as it stands when I get home so you can see it?

Yeah, I wonder if there isn't a motherboard issue or something.. Obviously it's something far beyond a simple problem for it to be this nasty.
Unfortunately the only one I know is Memory Express, and like you said they're backed up so no quick turnaround. Don't know of any other places that I'd trust.
EDIT: Or let us know the model of motherboard and we can see if we can find how to turn off the onboard video. Maybe it needs a jumper set (old school style)?

Do you know the motherboard model? Most of the online manuals are pretty good.

The ATI Control Centre usually has a few things that try to "show off" the features. I think I recall a racing car driving along or flags waving. Have you gone into the control centre and looked around?
(and I like the typo - doas the actual bios say "HOLT ON"?)

So I now have a problem with my comp. My PSU fan crapped out on me and I just got the new one (RMAed it), the problem is my comp won't boot up anymore. The mobo gets power but when I hit the switch nothing will boot up (and yes I did get the connections for the power switch etc). Anyone got any ideas?

How soon after it died did you catch the PSU fan not working? Is it possible that there was some heat issues that also killed something on the MB?
Remove the memory modules and startup the computer. Do you hear any beeps? If not then either your memory or MB could be toast.
Hopefully you didn't fry your MB while you were replacing the PSU.

My old desktop died on me Thursday night, and I picked up a new package machine today.
I play games on my computer, and the video and sound card on this thing just aren't up to snuff. The video card from my old computer was great and I had only upgraded it about 6 months ago, but it wont fit in this new machine; it's just a little too long. The card is an NVIDIA e-GeForce 7800 GS. The card the machine came with is an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE.
My questions about the video cards are why wont my old card fit in this new machine? And what should I upgrade to for good performace with my games at the upper quality video settings, that will fit in this thing?
Also, I need a new sound card, because the sound is laggy inside the games and it pops and crackles. It's listed in the Device Manager as "Realtek High Definition Audio" which sounds like a crappy card even to me. What's a good sound card to pick up?

Your old video card is probably AGP and your new board probably supports PCI Express. You'll need a new video card.

But before trying a few of those things try the latest "F8" version BIOS from Gigabyte:

Unfortunately there's two versions of your motherboard, so I'm not sure which one you have or even how to find out. It might be on the motherboard itself somewhere, usually there's the brand name and model # printed onto the motherboard somewhere, and often it'll have which version it is.

When I install the ATI Radeon software though the card fails and the whole system becomes unstable until I uninstall again.
I have the service pack 2 installed and the net framework 2.0 as well.
Any ideas?
And failing that ... anyone recommend a good shop to drop the thing off at with a quick turnaround?

This sounds VERY familiar to me.
The refreshing in waves is caused by lack of a proper driver. The failure of the card following driver install is caused by defective or incompatible hardware. You can blame the AGP standard to be subpar especially between the various versions. In my case, I had to replace my GIGABYTE motherboard because it wasn't providing enough voltage to the card even though it claimed it was up to spec. Interestingly enough, it prefered a Radeon X850 Pro (and would work fine) while it would not work with a GeForce 6200. I believe this may be down to the X850 getting it's power off a molex plugged right in while the newer 6200 card actually has to get all it's power from the slot.
Spare yourself the shop, the man hour charges themselves would probably cover the price of new motherboard for yourself. Otherwise try to borrow a videocard that requires separate power and give it a try.

Does whether my laptop comp is plugged in or operating on battery affect the speed? It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww operating on battery. I plugged it in and it operated normally a few hours later.

There should be a power management option somewhere. Usually most laptops degrade performance when on the battery to extend battery life. It should be a simple switch to change it back to full performance (on my mac is right on the top bar).
