Just seems like a terrible idea. Markstrom has had one very good year, in a contract year, in which he was injured to boot. Goalie performance is hard to predict. Try coming up with a list of UFA goalie signings on 5+ year deals since the last lockout and see how many of them you think ended up looking smart.
He was very good last year as well and has been trending well since he got here

Obviously it depends on what the number is, if he wants too much they let him walk most likely, just like every other player

Theres no way they would get a top 10 pick for demko, don't think anyone suggested that

Yeah it's not an easy situation. He's a 30 year old goaltender who was the team's best player this season. He's going to want a contract that's not likely going to be very good for any team in the long run but if you don't sign him and goaltending goes from a strength into a weakness it can sink the team next season. The Bobrovsky contract is a cautionary tale of signing a 30 year old goaltender long term and while Markstrom won't get a contract like that he's likely going to ask for a contract that pays him top 10 goaltender money for a 5 year term. If he hits free agency I'm sure the Flames will be kicking the tires so Benning will have to lock him up before he gets a chance to talk to other teams.

Gross watching Canucks have a chance at taking series. Their top players showed up. Wish I could say the same thing for the flames.

If the Canucks move on and the Flames get bounced I'm not gonna enjoy it

Ah well, at least the Oilers are out.
The Flames tried to push out of their rebuild after they drafted Tkachuk in 2016 and they traded a high 2nd for a 30+ goalie. They then went on to trade a 1st and 2 2nds the following offseason for a 27 year old Dman. I don’t think we can say the Flames have been rebuilding for a few years.

The Canucks are just beginning to come out of their rebuild. They traded their 1st for a forward but also have their top 2 core players on their ELCs

Canucks also have a lot of bad contracts. Let's not pat them on the back yet.

I think the Canucks have a few advantages at key positions over the Flames and have a brighter future as a result. It comes down to having key pieces down the middle of the ice to build around. Pettersson and Horvat at C. Hughes on D. Markstrom and Demko in goal.

Hughes is the Canucks best player. And what a player he is.

And this is a team that has Petterson, Horvat & Boeser.

Fun fact: JT Miller was born in East Palestine.

Either our #1 D or our #1 C or our #1 G is our best player, and you can make a case for each of them.

One thing that is happening is that some how, and it makes no sense but, some how Elias Pettersson is becoming under-rated. He drives the Canucks bus. Every underlying metric and advanced stat shows that he is by far the most important player for the Canucks offense. No one else was even close. Without him, it would dry up over night. But Hughes gets talked about as the team MVP, Markstrom gets talked about as the team MVP and even JT Miller got credit as team MVP. And the issue isn't that these guys aren't deserving of this talk, but that Elias isn't even in anyone's mind for this is mind blowing.

Yes and no.

Despite being a Canuck hater, I recognize how good Pettersson is, and before the emergence of Hughes, he was by far and away the Canucks best player. Hughes is becoming a special player thought, and is already the best on the Canucks team.

That doesn't take anything away from Pettersson.

I sincerely think the Canucks have passed the Oilers and Flames in their rebuilds and will return to relevancy sooner than us. Sad.

Markstrom is the Canucks best player...they don't even make the playoffs without him and get blown out last night and this convo is very different.

When he got hurt at the end of the year they were dropping like a stone...covid saved their season. They HAVE to resign him

Their top two skaters are getting 10M each soon though, will be interesting to see how they manage that if they keep Markstrom at market value.

It's crazy.

He's had flashes where I've honestly thought "I'm more worried about him in our division for the foreseeable future than I am McDavid"

McDavid is scary for his speed and hands, but Pettersson is like this freakish combination of both Sedin brothers (hockey sense, playmaking, shooting) but also better defensively, bigger, and seems a bit meaner.

It's a homer take, though I legitimately believe it's true, but Pettersson is already better than McDavid.

Pettersson plays two ways and makes everyone he plays with better. McDavid is a one-way player that racks up points for his line mates, but doesn't actually make them look any better.

there's nothing more Flames than watching your two biggest rivals get #1 centres that you've been searching for for 30 years.

Only if we can say Monahan is better than Horvat. Seems like a beneficial trade for everyone (except Oiler fans, which is ideal).

Only if Monahan dangles someone this game.

Holding eye-contact is a power move though.
