Ohh c'mon you need to spill the beans now.

My guess is Monahan for Ristolainen.

Yeah once I thought about it for a second it almost seemed too obvious.

Biggest issue with a deal like that (ignoring the players for a second) are the expansion draft implications. You end up moving a forward for a d-man, which ends up meaning you likely just lose a better d-man in the expansion draft.

Ristolainen is an interesting case study to me. Guy has actually always looked okay when I've watched him play for Buffalo with the eye test, but his advanced metrics are terrifying. But I'm also not sure advanced stats have figured out a way to normalize for a guy who's playing tough, top pairing minutes on a bad team, opposed to easier minutes in a second pairing on a better team.

He's actually a guy I would take a flyer if it were like a cap dump situation, I think he could have success where he could be slotted in a role that better fits his skill set, but no chance do you move Monahan for him as the center piece, especially with the expansion draft looming.

Hold on, Hold on.

Can we back this discussion up so I can get the context here without wading through pages of innuendo and bad trade proposals?

I don't think the team can move Monahan unless it's a 1 for 1 swap of centers. Nashville that has multiple centers on a team that's not clicking could be a target in a 1 for 1 swap involving say Johansen or Duchene. Otherwise I can't see the Flames moving him as there's no successor on the roster.

Philly: Konecny <-> Gaudreau

Sounds like an underpayment on the surface but Konency is 4 years younger, with a longer contract at a better price. Konecny doesn’t have Johnny’s offensive flair but he is steadily improving going from 28 to 47 to 49 to 61 (in 66 games) points. Plus he can play both wings.

Jersey: Hischier <-> Gaudreau

After a good rookie season, Hischier has not taken the next step to stardom with only 36 points in 58 games last year (injuries and being on a bad team play a part, no question). His deal is a bit hard to swallow given his recent play, as he will earn $500,000 more than Gaudreau but is under contact for 7 more seasons. But he’s only 21 and still oozes so much potential.

Boston: Futures <-> Gaudreau

Pastrnak is about as untouchable as it comes and after him the only players that have similar value to Gaudreau are too old. Bergeron’s 35, Marchand’s 32, Krejci’s 34. McAvoy would be a good return but he’s being groomed as Chara’s heir apparent so also likely untouchable. Best return would be multiple picks, definitely involving at least one first rounder plus a blue chip prospect like Studnicka or Vaakanainen. We’d have to take salary back to make it work but this kind of deal is unquestionably a rebuild deal which I’m not sure ownership/Treliving will allow.
Philly I'm all about Nolan Patrick. Really, seriously. I'm not weary about his condition, I think he will play high end hockey for many years.

Jerseys tough. Dpubt they want to let go of the desired pieces.

Boston I don't think would really dabble too deeply in a trade for JG.

Monahan for Duchene or Johansen is just getting older and more expensive and not necessarily better either.

I think Monahan flourishes away from Gaudreau. He's been too passive in letting Johnny run the line.

Well that's just the reality of moving on from Monahan. You aren't going to get a younger/better center than Monahan for Monahan in a trade. You may get a younger center that's got upside but that's not going to make the Flames better next season.

Could be there more to the deal. But where does that take us? Still need a Center and Perhaps Cozens is in the package. Because no matter what Monahan>>>>>>>>>>Ristolainen. There has to be balancing points on either side.But certainly more on Buffalos end.

Remember when there were some people that were opposed to Monahan and Gaudreau for Eichel? That would be a dream trade for this organization

Is there an elite player that the Flames could package those 2 together for? If Tampa gets knocked out by Columbus could we get Point and one of their overpaid guys like Gourde, Palat, Killorn, or Johnson? NMC get in the way

Monahan is not the problem with this team. He's working his butt off playing with a winger who won't dig our the puck or go in the corners and coughs up the puck regularly. He's also got a RW who has become invisible. Trade Gaudreau and get it over with.

Keep in mind this was probably 3-4 years ago, around the time where the Flames were looking at Risto and Chris Snow squashed any deal centred around Risto.

This was before the book was out on how bad Risto really was.

Thank god for Chris Snow.

I'd rather trade meager futures for a Duchene or Johansen and add them to Monahan and keep trying to win, or just deal Monahan for futures and rebuild rather than swap deck chairs on the good ship Flame-tanic.

You should be weary about Patrick’s condition.
