Why on Earth would we keep a slot sniper who is afraid to battle in the slot when the physicality of the playoffs come? He is the most disengaged player I have ever seen when it comes to battling to win. Both players need to go to make the proper change to this core.

So all of you trading pundits are absolutely, positively sure Johnny is running home to the east coast, but Chucky is staying a Flame? I am not so sure either player will stay in Calgary once UFA shows up.

Well Tkachuk is an RFA when his contract ends.
So he can't really walk away any time soon.
However, the Flames would have to qualify him at 9 million as the minimum.
With a flat cap, I'm not sure I would want to pay any more than that, unless he has some 85+ point seasons.

Is it $9 million? Yeah maybe that's what it was.
He could be gone in three seasons if he wants. Let the RFA contract play out, sign a 1 year QO, and the next off season he is a 25 year old UFA.
It's a risk on his part, but not far fetched.

At this stage, for a team mired in mediocrity, there should be no untouchables.
If you can move Tkachuk for a #1 centre, you should take a hard look.

A Couturier trade is not as far fetched as you are making it out to be IMO.
If Husky's rumor had happened they slide Giroux into Couturier's spot, slide Gaudreau into Giroux's spot and they've lost nothing, well... nothing except the Ghost contract which is going to severely inhibit their ability to extend Giroux and Couturier in two seasons.

Missed the mark on the age difference.
Still, I don’t see why Philadelphia does this. Trading a 1C who’s is a strong two way player/Selke candidate and replacing him with a scoring winger who is essentially useless if he isn’t scoring, as has been the case for his playoff career aside from perhaps one series. This doesn’t happen often if ever. Pretty sure Giroux’s recent success has been off the wing as well. Why move him back to full time C? Who plays their tough mins?
Even the source of the rumour at hand is highly questionable. Sure the owners will likely know when a trade of this magnitude is being discussed. But why would the owner tell the family member? These are shrewd business men who are probably pretty tight lipped with sensitive information. Secondly, why would the family member share that info with a friend? So the friend can talk about it on CP? Doesn’t really pass the smell test, does it?
Has there been any indication or legitimate source that has even mentioned Couturier has been discussed in a trade? Not that I can recall.

I am still dubious about the gaudreau-couturier trade but could you imagine if we had done that and the rumored hall trade at the deadline?
Anyways I am of the opinion that Gaudreau is for sure gone this off season. If theres even the remote possibility that someone will take Gio at this point I think we should explore that. Go hard after signing Hall. If you can sign Laviolette do it, but otherwise IMO keep ward. Maybe throw a contract at Lehner.
That is enough change for one offseason. We would be trading 1, maybe 2 franchise cornerstones, changing the team leadership, solidify the net, and bringing in a new offensive driver, without even considering the pieces that you theoretically acquire for Gio and Gaudreau. It's a lot of work, but it also doesnt substantially alter the team to the point where we're starting from square 1. What's left still has the horsepower to take us into the playoffs imo.
Theoretical roster:
Hall-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane
Lucic-Bennett-Dube
Reider-Ryan- Gawdin/Phillips
Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-?
Mackey- ?
Kylington
Lehner
Rittich
We would need one of the gaudreau/gio trades to address the RD need, but otherwise could target mostly futures/ young players with untapped upside.

I'd think Jersey would have taken Hanifin. Seems like a much better return than they got from Arizona

Yeah nobody on the roster is untouchable for the right price.
I wonder if the Senators take a hard look at making a push to unite the Tkachuk brothers. They have a crazy surplus of assets in this draft, a deep prospect pool, and if I was their GM I think I'd look at a godfather offer to make it happen.
They wouldn't give up both 3&5 but they have the assets to send over an offer of something like:
5th Overall Pick
NYI 1st Rounder (23-31 overall)
2 2020 2nd Rounders (They have 4 in this draft)
Prospect (One of Formenton, Batherson, Bernard-Docker, etc)
Ottawa could make that trade and still leave the weekend with a 3rd overall pick, 2 2nd Rounders, and the Tkachuk brothers united...
Would never happen because their owner would be too cheap to take on Tkachuk's contract and qualifying offer, but man they have the assets to do it if they wanted.

Yeah they said it was a choice between a hockey trade and a futures trade. They ultimately chose the futures package.

If they want our Tkachuk it starts with #3.
3rd overall+NYI 1st rounder+ White for tkachuk+Kylington is what I would want.

It's definitely a bit concerning if a conditional pick (that would've probably stayed a 2nd if not for Covid) was perceived as having more value than Hanifin...

I think it fell apart because Calgary’s offer was contingent on Hall signing an extension. hall and his agent weren’t willing to do so at that time.
I’m sure the two sides will talk this offseason, but if the Flames get bounced in the next game or two, it won’t help selling the team to Hall.

If the Flames pull a Tkachuk to OTT trade, the prospect they target should be Norris. They need something that could turn into a legit 1C.
A package of 5th OA and Norris is a decent start, but again I don't see a full tear down happening.

I would do Tkachuk for #3 in a heartbeat as that's a path to a #1 Centre. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the Kings take Stutzle at 2 which means you get Byfield at #3 - who has unquestionable upside as a #1 centre - and perhaps even an elite #1.

That's not what was reported. What was reported was the Devils went a different direction. The offers from Arizona and Calgary were both strong, but Calgary's was very different.
They chose the Arizona route.

I don't project Norris as a 1C - upside is a 2nd line centre, but he could end up being just a very solid #3.

Can't be just for #3.
Proven commodity is worth multiple unproven commodities. I don't think you get #3 though.
Norris
#5
NYI pick
#33
for
Tkachuk
Bennett
At 5th overall you still get one of Perfetti/Rossi as potential 1C's or Drysdale/Sanderson as potential #1D's
