If you'd shown me all but the scoring plays of the last two games, I'd have been happy to find out that the Flames came out of them with a split. Dallas deserved better than 0-2.
On to the next one!

We were one broken Reider stick away from being up 3-1 and only lost due to another bad luck broken stick. These “series over” “Flames not even in it” “bunch of losers” “Colorado all over again” posts are straight up embarrassing.

Reminds me of games 2 and 4 against Colorado.
Avalanche won those by a single goal, came back late in the third period.
Yep, just like today's game, separated by only "bad luck".
Only difference is that Calgary had better advanced states against Colorado. The the Avalanche could actually finish on their chances (unlike Dallas).

Flames were playing with the Stars until the Refs decided on a BS track of 5 straight penalties at least a couple of which were ridiculous.
At the same time, the Stars hook and grab and tackle and hold and nothing. If Treliving wants to make a difference he's on the phone to the league right now.
Of course you're going to get outshot and lose all kinds of momentum with penalty after penalty after penalty. I was overall happy with the first and part of the second.
Lets face it, this wasn't going to be an easy series, the Stars are a pretty deep veteran team, and I really like their blueline. They have the capability to take over games on their own. There's also a pretty major size difference here.
Anyone who wants to say series over, please do us a favor, give up go watch baseball, you make these threads impossible to read through.
Flames need to simplify their breakouts, and they need to figure out that back side board circle of the stars its killing them.
As good as Bennett was, we really miss MT in this series.
Talbot as always been good. But the Flames are missing some emotion and looked worn out.
Its a three games series, this is gut check time, if you think its over then act like it, start a thread on your demands for changes and trades and firings so people can take part or avoid it if they want to.
It ain't over. They'll be vengeance.

Yeah I'm not even disappointed. Playing against a team with Perry and Cogliano... by the Flames' standards, that wasn't even a choke. It was barely a cough.
I hardly expect anything different at this point. It would help if this team had six NHL-calibre defenders... but right now, they have four. And that's with Giordano slumping to the point where he's on the cusp of being replacement-level.
I understand the Gustafsson acquisition. They needed someone to give the powerplay a boost. His defensive game is ghastly, but it is what it is. But the Derek Forbort acquisition was costly and, to this day, makes no sense. He is a defensive and offensive liability and is the slowest player on either team.
At least guys like Bartkowski and Eriksson had no acquisition cost. The Flames gave up a decent price for a defenseman who's actually a downgrade on the guy they gave away to the Sharks for free.

Only saw the OT. Talbot is amazing, I was liking what I was seeing out of Lucic.

Flames missing their best forward were 12 seconds away from a 3-1 series lead

The Flames are literally worse by every single metric this year versus last year. They are simply relying on special teams and praying Talbot plays god-like every game to even stand a chance.
Pathetic.
|
I have no idea how tbe fancy stats work or where to find them but I would be curious for a period by period breakdown of this game. To my eye they were even or perhaps even a slight advantage for the Flames in the first, blown out in the second and third (with a helping hand from the powerplays as it is tough for any team to get in a 5 on 5 groove killing so many penalties) and then even in OT.

This is where i take a two day break from the noise around the series.
Was so excited, I thought we had it. And again after the overturn. Was going to go visit the family and celebrate.
Cruel plot twist by the universe.

Honestly, I noticed Gio way more today for his good play than his poor play. He's such a warrior out there blocking shots and tracking pucks. He may be slowing down but I'm glad he's on the team.
Now, Forbort...

Game Takes: Stars 5 Flames 4 (Series tied 2-2)
- Talbot literally worn out
- good start but the Flames just fade
- far too many penalties
- better team won clearly

Scoring Winger
|
It really boils down to compete level to me.
Bennett-Dube-Lucic are trying to win every puck battle, every shift, for the entire game. Every time there's a loose puck they're flying after it, every time there's a 50/50 they're lowering the shoulder and initiating contact. Bennett's like a pig in #### when he's battling in the corner and laying into guys, and that's why he's so effective.
The rest of the team is only sporadically engaged at that level, at best. Lindholm's unwillingness to engage physically and move his feet on the tying goal cost us big time. That slapper was a dumb play that could've been avoided, but when your guy's in the crease banging at a rebound you can't just stand off to the side and swing your stick and hope. You've gotta be in there, tying up his stick and pushing him out of the crease. Microcosm of what's gone wrong for us in the last two games.

Conventional wisdom has changed on other aspects of the game...
* Don't pull the goalie before the one minute mark. Now teams regularly do.
* Don't shoot for an empty net until you cross centre ice so you don't get an icing. Now teams regularly do.
Those are a couple quick examples but I'm sure there are others. The game evolves and changes in different ways and I'm in the camp that being without a stick is more of a handicap then rushing to get another one.

It's a learning experience, Flames have not played a lot of playoff hockey as some teams have and a little of it may be coaching. Hopefully they can learn quickly as they go. I remember Darryl Sutter's teams backing up too much during a playoffs and he had to make some adjustments. We have a good group they just have to learn from it.

Assuming this is true, it's up to the coach to identify that and roll two pairings at ES. The last time we won a playoff series our third pair was Rafael Diaz and Tyler Wotherspoon.
