The questions were pretty stupid, not sure why he wouldn't be rolling his eyes.
These media members should be embarrassed this is the best they can do with that much preparation time.

McDavid never looked happy to be there.
And it’s where his agent did him a disservice. He should have never signed an 8 year deal.
He could have signed a 4 or 5 year contract at the exact same $12.5M and the Oilers probably don’t even bat an eye at that request. Instead of having 6 years left in that organization he’d only have 2-3 until UFA and would hold a lot more leverage if he wanted out.
Every offseason his body language screams somebody that isn’t happy there and I feel like there may even be some resentment between McDavid and Draisaitl that’s growing in terms of who gets the better line mates to play with.
I still think it’s a bit weird that for the playoffs they broke up the RNH - Draisaitl - Yamamoto line and stapled RNH next to McDavid.

And I think Matthews signed his contract with Toronto shortly after?
From a Player's perspective I love the structure of the Matthews contract, he going to hold Toronto hostage with that whereas McDavid's contract basically makes him their prisoner.

The Oilers are so bad they managed to stretch a 'Decade of Darkness' out over almost 20 years!

He is the least charismatic player I can think of, he looks like he struggles to speak. There was no reason to make him a captain, they needed to bring in a solid 4th line veteran who will lead the charge and the talking. But they traded that guy to us.

I think his contract is fine - he chose security and a guaranteed $100M no matter what happens to him. He still has the option to tell the Oilers to trade him RFN anytime he wants, given his stature. Sacrificing some freedom of movement for guaranteed $$$ is perfectly logical. Matthews could obliterate his knee and then his freedom/leverage is worthless. Again, because of who he is, I think McDavid (and agent) made a perfectly logical choice...

He took the safe choice leaving money on the table for security. When you consider how salaries for top players have been escalating you can make a case that he and most top young players are best off signing the minimum deal extension that takes them to free agency as there's little doubt to me as a UFA he would not only be able to choose a better destination but would be likely eclipsing $15 million/season. Really the biggest issue for McDavid at the end of the day is that he hitched himself to one of the worst run organizations in professional sports so when I see him hold his head down like at the end of the Hawks series I don't feel sorry for him at all as he's getting exactly what he signed on for. He and his agent really should have known better.

There was also no doubt many promises made by Lowe and the organization on how they would support him and by him taking”less” overall would help them achieve that by getting more skilled players to turn the team into a powerhouse.
The same snake oil salesman that told him(and other players over the years like Pronger) that, then also, out of hubris, as one example, blows some of that savings and rushes a Kassian deal through because all hockey eyes were on that mouth breather for his 15 minutes after an incident with their main rivals (and before the next incident which was bound to occur)..
He’s unhappy to go there, had one good team season, but like so many others, has been left to fend for his own and his development has stagnated, compounded by a terrible team around him due to past failure, a toxic environment, and a circus behind the scenes with a puppet master still thinking he knows best.
Now the promises made to him years back have never come through and never look like they will with the cap situation and now that McDavid knows how dire the situation is, and what the players around the league think about wanting to avoid Edmonton, to even think about attracting free agents to help him.

Anyone hear what James Neal said in his blog...
Quote:
When Edmonton was named one of the hub cities, we were all excited. But the guys who were the most excited? The gamers.
Apparently it’s a lot easier to bring your set-up in the car than on a plane. No checked bags. More monitors. That sort of thing.
The gaming here….. I don’t even know what to say. There are guys who’ve brought every single piece of gaming equipment they own: double monitors, PC rigs, you name it. If you took it away, they’d be lost. All they do is play Call of Duty or Fortnite, or whatever, for hours. It’s how they spend their free time, since we can’t leave the hotel or go into anyone’s room — except I don’t even think they’d want to, because that would screw up their gaming.
And they’re all talking — no, sorry, yelling — on their mics. I can hear them through the walls. Total insanity. I’ve spent most of the past month listening to Andreas talk to his computer screen. I always give him a hard time about it. (Around 9:30 p.m., I’ll knock on the wall so he knows it’s time to put that thing away for the night.)
Gaming aside, everyone’s been pretty cool...
|
So, even though they can't win games, the Oilers probably have some pretty high scores on Call of Duty. Good thing Neal bangs on the wall or Andreas might forget to go to sleep. I wonder what happens to the guys with rooms that aren't adjacent to him.

Weird thing to point out.
"These young guys are completely isolated, not even allowed to leave their rooms! Isn't it crazy they brought video games and are playing all the time?!"

Given the way Athanasiou played in the Qualifying Rounds, Neal might as well have let him keep playing.

Having an agent like Bobby Orr probably helped guide him to going for the safe money. Orr is the perfect example of a generational talent who’s career was cut short due to injuries. And a player like McDavid is one that is especially at risk for an injury like that due to his style of play. His high speed rushes wide around defensemen eventually lead to him being tripped or just slipping and going into the boards or the net at high speed.
I could see Orr telling him to take the long term, big money contract. He has all the power to make a trade demand whenever he wants... and I personally believe that will come next summer.

He’s clearly unhappy that he was behind Athanasiou in the lineup.
