The Flames were a lower seed because they rolled that atrocious Hanifin-Hamonic defense pair all season when it wasn't working at all, not visually or statistically.
This is not the roster from the regular season.

It should not surprise anyone that the team has played very solid defense (outside of game 2 against Jets) in the bubble with Hamonic not on the 2nd pairing. The team also played better defensively when he was injured during the season. I feel sorry for the team that pays him 2nd pairing money this offseason.

I'm coming to the sad realization that Hamonic wasn't great for the Flames. I let his warrior reputation cloud my judgement, but he just wasn't great defensively. I daresay, a glorified Kris Russell.
Trading the 1st for him at the time was iffy, but now it really seems like an egregiously bad trade by the GM. I guess you win some (Hanifin, Lindholm) and you lose some (Hamonic, Brouwer)
What the trade did was allow the Andersson's and Kylington's to develop as they didn't need to be rushed. I think that time in the minors really helped Andersson. Still not an ideal trade, but I can see the silver lining after the fact. As small as it is.

Hard to believe that for a fifth round pick, we got Kris Russell, which:
- got us to the second round of the playoffs
- got us Dillon Dube and Tyler Parsons
- pumped up his value enough that the Oilers brought him in
- EDIT: I'd even argue that Russell's far less fortunate play in 2015-16 got us Matthew Tkachuk haha
on the flip side, I'm not even gonna touch what we paid or got in return for Hamonic.

Why lament the Hamonic trade. You have no idea how the last couple seasons would play out without that happening. Seems like we are in a good spot right now, who knows where we would be had it not happened.
