I stop and contemplate the Oilers in year 17 of their 4 year plan.
I remember how they traded away their heart and soul Ryan Smith for a young D-Man Ladislav Smid, who played his entire career and retired an old 12 year veteran with over 500 NHL games ...not one of which was in the NHL playoffs.
Ethan Bear has stepped in as a rookie defenceman and looked nothing short of tremendous for the Oilers driving play. Edmonton’s backend still has some question marks beyond Bear and Oscar Klefbom. Adam Larsson continues to drag down those around him as Darnell Nurse gets carried by Bear. Matt Benning, at the very least, has shown he can be a more than competent third-pairing defenceman.
Between Mikko Koskinen and Mike Smith, Edmonton is getting competent goaltending.
Bottom two goalie stats in the qualifiers = competent?
If you say so.
If it were my team I would say that doesn't cut it if I'm looking to win. But standards are a little different up there I suppose. Certainly not totally on them, but they were out-dueled by Corey Crawford who had to deal with equally poor defence.
This is a franchise that basically commissioned a tv show to document their successful re-build.
Oil Change premiered on June 24, 2010. The final episode was on May 5, 2013 and has this description on wikipedia:
"The disappointing final weeks of the team's season are chronicled in the third-season finale."
That was over 7 years ago. Nothing has changed. That description could be applied to almost every season of the Oilers for the last 15+ years.

Is there anything more arrogant than that?
"Sure we're the laughing stock of the NHL right now, but our rebuild is going to be so glorious that we owe it to our fans to document it for posterity."

Yeah a documentary that heralds Connor coming back from a knee injury that should have ended his career, according to them, and Connor was the executive producer. That's called an ego piece.
