I would say this requires some nuance:
The Flames DID NOT play well against Colorado in the playoffs last season. Otherwise, the games with the Avalanche have been pretty competitive for a couple of years now.
The Flames DO NOT play well IN Vegas. In games against VGK at the Saddledome the Flames have pretty consistently owned the ice. The Knights's achilles heel is playing away from home: 17-13-4 on the road this year, and 36-33-6 the past two years.

Hanifin - Giordano - Kylington - Mackey
I think our LD side is good. We've also got Lerby heading our way this season too.
But, agreed - Forbort has been a nice add for the PK.

I would be keen to bring both Gus and Forbort back. They bring different things but both things this club needs.
That is assuming Hamonic and Brodie walk.
I would love to have Brodie back, but Hamonic not so much.

Yeah, my first priority is to get Brodie back, but that is a worrisome proposition with the kind of contract-offers he is likely to entertain in UFA.
Brodie has been the Flames best defenseman through three games.

I always thought that Hamonic contributed well to the Flames, especially for the few years where they had zero muscle on D. That said, Forbort is a younger, and presumably cheaper player.
As per Gus and Brodie, the really question comes down to dollar bills. Between Valimaki and Kylington the need for a finesse D man is reduced. if neither player is at the right term/price point then let them walk.

Of Brodie, Hamonic, Gustafsson and Forbort, I think you need to sign 2, and if the budget allows, it would be great to sign 3.
I think most agree that Hamonic won't be at the top of the list.
Brodie comes down to price, but I hope we can get it done.
Forbort is pretty key, IMO, because we are otherwise short on physicality (price being key again, of course).
Gustafsson would be great, but offensive Dmen we have. So I view him more as a luxury.

If we don't sign Forbort I wonder about Carson Soucy from Minnesota.
From Viking, Alberta and is going to be a UFA because of a bit of a loophole (25 years or older, 3 years pro but less than 80 games player, but his first year pro was just 3 games played burning a year of the ELC).
26 year old, 6'5" good skating defensive D that also had 7 goals and 7 assists in 55 games.

I think we have mobile puck moving dmen but I don’t think we have someone that can run a PP like Gus
We also don’t have a player with the nick name Gus...which is an awesome nick name

I'd bring back Forbort too if I could for cheap. But I'd be fine with another cheaper UFA who can provide something similar. Gus is worth bringing back, but I worry that his salary is going to outweigh his contributions, and that's the only reason I'd avoid him.
|
For Brodie, it is the term that scares me more than anything else. I don't care who it is, I hate it when the Flames start handing out long contracts to players over 30.

What the Flames need to avoid is paying a bottom pair guy big money. This team can't support a 3 million dollar defender playing 10-12 minutes a game.

Brodie has been the exact same player for six years. He can skate with anyone in the league.
Guys like him play past 35 all the time. He’s the least worrisome extension on the roster.

Agree with this.
I would argue that Brodie is an elite skater and his overall game is improving, certainly in terms of consistency. If the Flames don't sign him I fear they will miss him dearly.

50/50 is at $600K now.
Not Dumpsville territory, but should break a million.

It is open until 10:30pm. In the last hour the total grew by nearly $100,000. It will probably start growing faster after puck drop.
