Lose a game ---> we have the wrong core!

Can we do the big picture talk elsewhere? This is about the game/series at hand. Would love to stay on topic.

Can't be going there every time we lose a game (or even) a period.

You know who I'm most disappointed with? Me. Every year it's the same song and dance up go my hopes then the Flames lay their usual stinky egg.

I am the problem.

You know what it doesn't say though? That we have a good coach. Hell, again - we don't even have a head coach. We have an interim Head Coach. Hopefully Tree finally gets it right this off-season.
How do we even know what Ward (or anyone) can do if the players aren't the right ones though?

I mean look at the history of this core....its the same thing over and over again regardless of who is behind the bench. Coaching only does so much at this level.

Im not advocating for Ward to return per se, but right now with this group, Scotty Bowman in his prime would be seeing the same results Im guessing.

I know this..if I'm a "renowned" or "elite" coach in this league, Im sure as hell not coming to Calgary with the reputation these players have established for themselves. Why would I do that to my own reputation?

We're not in the off season yet, but it sounds like you're cheering for a loss. Its a little premature.

Well lots of people remember longer than a game and see a long developing problem.

The core IS the story of this game.

Did they lose the series? I thought it was 1-1.

The stat that we've lost 9 (now 10) game two's in a row was just another dagger for a life long Flames fan. A lot of roster and management turnover in that period. The only common denominator are the fans...I don't think we know as much about hockey as we lead on, and we influence management/ownership.

I am the problem too.

Can't blame him for thinking like that though I think it is just mentally preparing for the worst case which let's be honest this team is pretty damn good at

I'm hammering the coaching button pretty hard due to the history of coaches in Calgary.

Peters - out of the league after leaving here
Gulutzan - assistant coach in the league
Hartley - out of the league after leaving here
Keenan - out of the league after leaving here
Playfair - assistant coach in the league
Darryl Sutter - removed himself as coach, went on to coach and win two cups elsewhere
Don Hay - out of the league after leaving here

Brian Sutter was the last head coach we had that went on to coach elsewhere (I mistakingly said Page earlier).

I think the organization needs to re-think how we hire coaches, and probably the amount of money we make available to hire coaches. I also think the organization needs to make pretty huge changes to the core of the roster as it has continually proven itself to be lacking. It's not one or the other, it's both.

Being in demand does not equal having a proven track record.

This team consistently refuses to hire proven coaches. They hire buddies, family members, first-timers, retreads looking at redemption, and has-beens. They will do it again this summer, instead of gunning for guys like Laviolette.

Just look at the track record of coaches after they are through with the Flames. Usually the next stop is Russia, the juniors, or the retirement home.

I seriously doubt the Flames will improve with BT as GM.

I get the feeling BT has done what he can. He built a team that can make the playoffs..... But not win anything.

This team doesn't like afternoon games. I haven't crunched the numbers, but I would bet the Flames record is terrible for afternoon games. No more afternoon games, please.

Cool. Why bring it up after every goal against of bad period, what does that accomplish? No changes are coming in this tournament, so is that not then talk better reserved for later when its appropriate and relevant?

Make a thread and title it this team needs a change, or something, and vent the big picture issues there.

Some people want to just observe the game happening now (and, god forbid) find some enjoyment and entertainment in doing so without the sky is falling folks butting into the conversation to have a pity party just because we gave up a goal or had a bad 5 minutes.

That #### is actually insufferable when you know nothing is getting done change wise for at least a few months. Its just complaining for no reason and oiler/jet lurker reading material. Why give that to them?

Try enjoying having hockey in a pandemic or vent it in an appropriate thread.

I stated my major observations on the last page of the GT. I will only add here that the Flames were satisfied to stay on the perimeter, and except for the couple of minutes after the Bennett goal, were just far too soft, and easy to play against.

I don't trust this team to bring in a better GM than Treliving.

Fans don't have to do anything with it.

The problem primarily is not building enough high impact assets through the draft. Throughout all these years, have we EVER had an all-star caliber centreman?

This organization is getting better at drafting over the past few years I would say. We got young players on the roster and the prospect pool base that should become everyday NHLs. But Flames need to get more offensive players from the draft that can pan out to become star quality.

Gaudreau is the only x-factor player we've had since Iginla, and his play style just isn't effective enough to do it on his own in the playoffs. He needs someone else that the opposing team have to focus on as well.

I wonder what sort of lineup changes we see tomorrow. We probably see Jankowski come in, but do we see any changes in the D-Core? Does Stone/Kylington come in for Forbort? I don’t think so.

Talbot will and should get the start tomorrow.

I'm loving the hockey (I've watched everything possible so far).

It is hard to analyze today's game without it becoming a bigger conversation, because the reasons why we lost today are what a lot of us think are the issues with the team as a whole. Our best players failed to show up during a fast, hard-checking game again.

Johnny Gaudreau didn't just have an off-game, he was bad. He contributed to the loss. Ditto with Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Mark Giordano. The powerplay was inexcusably lazy. I think our PP strategy is complete trash, but the lazy entries and the lack of effort in battling along the boards would make a good strategy look bad. 0/6 on the PP in a playoff game? You can't do that and think you're going to win.

While I respect the fact Ward won a Cup, it was with a top organization, and the leadership of the team included a guy that played with a freaking collapsed lung and about a hundred other injuries. His teammates also had an incredible will to win. We don't have anyone like Bergeron.
