jets Suck.

...see what I did there?
Well I've heard they don't have smartphones in Winnipeg, so that would explain the misinterpretation.

It's worth noting that Dom Luszczyszyn's model at the Athletic gives the Flames a 60% chance of winning which is one of the highest probabilities of the qualifying round teams.
Another good model guy Sean Tierney (Charting Hockey) has Calgary in 5

He also has Montreal upsetting Pittsburgh

Outplayed, but win. The two teams are complete opposites from their only dress rehearsal.

Calgary really needs a goalie to stand up.
Almost any Flames fan can surely attest that this team's issues over the last two seasons go far beyond needing a goalie to step up. This was a similar circumstance against the Avalanche, whilst receiving great goaltending from Smith, and look what happened.

Are Rittich/Talbot causing Monahan and Guadreau to go through repeated and prolonged stretches of invisibility? If those two show up as the best players on the Flames (as they should) the Flames probably win the Avalanche series and this series against the Jets.

You could rephrase your comment to: "Calgary really needs a goalie to stand up in order to fill the massive void on 2/3rds of the top line which seems to appear whenever the going gets tough."

Rittich. If he falters then blow up the goaltending again this summer where there should be plenty of options available. I am not interested in signing Talbot to be the 1A of this team

I'm certainly not suggesting it's all about the goaltender.

But the Jets have an advantage up front, Flames a massive advantage on the blueline. If we have Rittich at his best the Jets have an advantage in net ... but if Calgary's goaltender is worse than that it's a problem.

If Flames want to succeed Tkachuk is going to have to drive Hellebuyk wild. Park him and Looch in front of the net alternating shifts, take a couple of hardish interference calls early on, and hope to get in his grill.................and of course, hope they can kill the penalties.

I agree with Darren Haynes as well. You pick one goalie for the series. You rotate through them and yer gonna lose.

I know everyone thinks this. But remove the first game lucky shutout, and he had a 4.25 GAA through the rest of the series

Even with the entire series he had a measly 3.26 GAA

He wasn't even a top 10 goalie who played in playoffs last year stats wise.

Im sick of people claiming he was unbelievably good because he truly was average.

He also gave up the tying goal with less than 3 minutes left in the two games he eventually lost in OT. You can't hope to win when your goalie does that.

Much easier playing with a good skating responsible Centre,

On the Lindholm wing There was Tanguay, Hueslis and Cammelleri not chopped liver by any stretch.

The worse/worst transgressions just kill me.

Things can get worse, and when they can't get any worse they are the worst they can get. You don't say "His worse season was ..." when you're trying to refer to his worst season.

Yeah I don't think Smith was all that good...Flames had the lead late in 3 of the 5 games and lost in 5. Not saying anyone else was up to snuff. Maybe Bennett but that's because his snuff is so low. Usually when a team is getting hammered with shots its easier for the goalie to look good.

One thing greatly overlooked about last year IMO is the Avs...they are a top team. They were only in 8th because of bad goal tending and injuries. Look at them now, cup favorite. In hindsight it wasn't much of a reward for finishing 1st in the west.

Teams should get to pick their opponent...would be awesome. #1 seed gets to pick who they face and so on. Imagine the conversation, trash talking, rivalries, ect.

I picked Rittich, but it's pretty much a toss-up for me.

I think Rittich has more potential to come out like lion and steal games in a short series, but Talbot might be the safer bet over the playoffs as things turn into a grind.

Talbot was starting to really pick it up later in the season, but Rittich seems to be hotter out of the gate

To be fair, those were two of the losses he actually played well in.

It's probably more the 5 and 6 goal shellings that caused the issue. Down 3-1 in the series and Smith let in 5 goals on 32 shots. That's embarrassing.

Game 4, where he let in a late tying goal, we were only in because of Mike Smith.

Man I hate to defend Mike Smith but goals against average isn't the whole story.

Smith was 1st in shots/60, 1st in high danger chances/60, and positive in goals saved above average.

The team was a complete mess defensively.

They allowed 50+ twice...game three were they got pounded 6-2 and game 4

So I will give you game four...the other losses he had a reasonable workload and didn't make the big save. I don't think he was bad but really he wasn't that great. Other guy made the big saves in OT.

I hope the Oilers go with Smith
